The Editor" is based upon an interesting premise. A young writer, James Smale, is understandably excited to have his first novel accepted by Doubleday Publishing Co. Much to his surprise, he learns that his assigned editor is none other than Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. This is a story of their working together on his novel. At the same time, James is navigating his strained relationship with his mother. Why his mother is so aggrieved with James, remains a mystery for much of the book and is never fully explained. The other important character is Daniel, who is James' live-in partner. James takes Daniel for granted throughout much of the story, due to James' absorption in his book and issues with his mother. Daniel gives him space and tries to be supportive, but their relationship suffers.
I found that the story dragged for me and there were times I thought of not finishing it. I read the book in fits and starts. I think this is because the characters were not fully developed and the author left a lot of my questions unanswered. The parts of the book I enjoyed best were the scenes with Jackie.
