Temperance Derek woke with a grunt and a muffled curse as his alarm went off with a screech. Things went down hill from there; Tawny, his kid sister who was hyper on two cups of coffee, burst through his door and started jumping on his bed. "Come on, jerk." she said, landing on her butt as she poked and prodded him when he refused to come out from the pillow he had jammed over his head. "I need to get to school; I have cheer practice in an hour and Coach Sheila said I can't be late again. And Dad said that one of the main roads got snowed out." "Get out, Tawny. God." Derek complained, shoving his sister off his bed, throwing his pillow at her when she lingered. Tawny disappeared out the door with an obnoxious giggle. After lying in bed for another five minutes, he finally forced himself up, pulling on a worn pair of Levis, a navy Henley, a sweatshirt, and a pair of work boots. He quickly brushed his teeth, grabbed his bag, and rushed out the door, giving his mother a peck on her cheek. After an excruciating 10 minute drive to Tawny's school, he let her out and turned the car, heading to school. He stifled another yawn as windshield wipers swept away falling particles of snow, glancing at his thermos of black coffee longingly.

Delaney stifled a yawn as she shuffled out of bed, quietly dressing in the dark. She had laid out her clothes the night before, dark skinny jeans, a long sleeved white shirt, and a dark grey scarf printed with reddish, orange poppies. She grabbed her makeup bag, quietly tiptoeing past her snoring roommate, Tiffany. They were both members of Chi Omega, one of the sororities on campus; Tiffany had stayed later at a Greek party, long after she had left, and was probably sleeping off a hangover. Delaney stifled a yawn as she closed the door to the adjacent bathroom behind her and flipped on the light. She studied her features in the mirror, frowning slightly when she saw that she had dark circles under her eyes. With a muffled groan, she unzipped her makeup bag and got to work. Nearly twenty minutes later, she finally reemerged, with her makeup skillfully applied and her long, wavy hair pulled back into a messy braid. She yanked on a pair of riding boots and, after glancing out the window, grabbed pullover. She slipped her bag over her back and darted out the front door. Delaney stopped briefly at the cafeteria for a chocolate muffin, which she quickly picked apart, and tea, which she was saving for class. She allowed herself one sip before she started walking to class, rubbing her arms to try and keep herself warm.

мαr ♚ | 186 comments Nevaeh's shoulders tensed once she stepped into the main building of the Montana State University or MSU as it was more commonly known by the students here. Her full back tattoo of a corset was clearly under her lace cardigan and backless black dress that she wore. Her skin prickled as she felt the many eyes of the young men she went to school with on her, them being naturally attracted to her vampire charm that she tried so hard to hide, but it was no use. She is what she is, and she can't change that, not now. History was Nevaeh's first class, and to be honest, she didn't really need it, she had lived through many of the historic events, even witnesses most of them. So the class was completely useless. Once she entered the classroom she sat down in her normal seat in the back, most of the chairs taken already expect for the one next to her and two of them at the front of the classroom.

Ethan wandered down the halls for a while, heading to the cafeteria to get himself a Dixie cup full of hot coffee to help him wake up and shake off the darkness of the night before when he had wandered the city as a lion, trying to hide himself from the pedestrians that were out late partying as they always did on Sunday nights. But it is almost impossible to keep yourself hidden in the busy streets of Billings and any other cities that he might have run too last night. He only knew a few places that he was at last night, Ethan vaguely remembered being in Paradise, Montana last night and this morning he was extremely exhausted from all that running in. I went all over the state last night, he thought as he sipped his coffee, ducking into his first class, history. His normal seat at the front of the classroom wasn't taken today as it had been last Friday. Immediately, he took his seat, finishing off his coffee and tossing the Dixie cup into the trash next to the teachers desk.

Temperance Derek yawned as he pulled into his parking spot, the tires of his truck slipping slightly in the snow that had accumulated; when he had worked with the ground crew the year before, the rock salt should have been laid down already. Gritting his teeth, he killed the ignition as he shoved his door open, leaning back to grab his travel mug and bag. His mood didn't improve as he finally got in from the cold; a group of his friends had called him over to their table and, after exchanging meaningless comments, they exchanged a complicated handshake before he walked away, a reluctant smile pulling at the corners of his mouth. It fell the minute he walked into the lecture hall; his seat in one of the middle rows had been taken, leaving only two seats in the front and two in the back. Then a tall guy came in behind him, brushing past him as he sent his empty cup arcing into the trash can and collapsed into one of the seats in the front. Since he never liked having everyone staring at him, he shouldered his bag and made his way to the back. As soon as he dropped into the empty seat, he realized that he had made a mistake. Because sitting next to him was Nevaeh Piper...his ex girlfriend. "Shit." He muttered as he leaned back in his chair. Hands down, this had to be the worst morning ever.

Things had been going so well for Delaney, until she saw Liam, her ex and a member of the hockey team, leaning against the bannister, shoving his tongue down some girl's throat. The scene didn't bother her much, which was probably arranged for her benefit. But when she saw who the other girl was, her face and neck heated with anger as she clutched her cup of tea; it was Elle Maxwell, one of the other cheerleaders and an all around terrible person. Instead of making a scene, which is probably what they wanted, she turned on her heel, stalking up the stairs. She made a pit stop in one of the bathrooms, making sure that her makeup was still flawless. By the time she got to her history class, her usual seat in the front row had been taken; there was one last front row seat available, on the right side, so she dropped into it, her cheeks still pink with fury as she flipped her fishtail braid over one shoulder. Delaney pulled out her binder and a pen, forcing herself to take a sip of tea. She looked at the guy next to her out of the corner of her eye; she didn't recognize him, so maybe she wouldn't have to worry about her less than graceful exit. Hopefully, he'd nod off in class, just like the rest of the slackers here, and she could save face. Appearance was everything to Delaney; it was the only thing she had left.

мαr ♚ | 186 comments Nevaeh reached into her backpack, back turned to the chair next to her as she pulled out her binder and notebook along with her textbook for this class, her blonde hair falling in front of her florescent blue eyes. Straightening up, she brushed her hair out of her eyes with one swift movement and set her things on her desk, glancing over at the seat next to her that was now taken, her eyes widened when she saw who was sitting there. Her ex boyfriend, Derek. She quickly looked away, if it was possible she certainly would've been blushing, but being a vampire her blood was frozen in her veins and so it was not possible for her to blush which she was thankful for. Unfortunately, her and Derek had gone through a bad break up about two years ago, leaving both of them completely hung up on each other, often coming to each other whenever they felt lonely. But that hadn't been anytime recent that she had been lonely. "Dammit." She cursed under her breath as her hair fell over her shoulder, making a curtain between her and Derek, her back slightly turned to him, her tattoo clearly visible at the angle she sat.

Ethan leaned back into his chair for a moment, popping his back on the chair as he yawned quietly before straightening up and pulling out his essentials for the class. Looking up when a blonde-haired beauty walked past his desk to sit in the one directly beside him, he shook his head, flipping open his notebook to the next blank page and pulling out his favorite black ink pen and tapping it against the notebook for a moment before setting it down on the desk, folding his arms in front of him that rested on the desk as he waited for the teacher to come in. He glanced over at the blonde next to him, turning in his chair so he faced her. "Hello, I've never met you before so I just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Ethan Clark," he stuck out is hand to shake hers.

Temperance Derek grit his teeth as he forced himself not to bang his head against the wall behind him. He and Nevaeh had gone out for a year in a half during high school, but had spilt up when he was a junior. Things had been strained for awhile, but he could tell that she wasn't telling him everything, so he started pulling away. Finally, things escalated into a huge fight, with him storming off. But, even though things had gone the way the way that they did, they still hung out, mostly when they were lonely. But he hadn't seen her in months; she hadn't contacted him in months. He had been angry, but honestly, what was he expecting? So he head thrown himself into school and football; and when he tore his ACL, he had focused on work, and, through his parents' machinations, shuttling Tawny around. Derek hadn't thought about her in months, and had been flirting with some girl who worked at the Starbucks kiosk across from him. He rubbed a hand over his short hair, trying not to stare at her like a creep when she shifted, thick black lines covering her back. His eyes widened and he blinked stupidly, not remembering seeing that particular tattoo before. He felt his face grow hot when some of the people next to him cast him amused glances. He coughed loudly and slumped back into his original position, glaring miserably at the clock.

Delaney took another gulp of tea, feeling the familiar heat rush through her. This might be her second year at Montana State, but she was always cold, especially today; despite the many layers she wore, she just couldn't get warm enough. She uncapped her pen, neatly writing the date at the top corner of her paper before dropping it back down as she reached for the cross that hung under her scarf; despite the chill, the metal was warm against her skin. She had just straightened it when she heard someone talking to her. Delaney turned, and came face to face with the guy who had been there when she arrived. To her credit, she didn't turn red from dismissing him so easily; he was really cute and probably tall, but after the Liam fiasco, she was going to be more careful. She gave him the same, carefree smile that she used for game days as she said, "Nice to meet you. I'm Delaney Callaghan." She eyed his hand, barely shaking it when their professor finally arrived, out of breath and pink cheeked from the cold. Giving the guy...Ethan, one last smile, she turned to face the front, her pen in hand once more.

((I just want to make sure I get the years right: both of the girls are sophomores, and the guys are juniors? lol, and let me know if I made Derek too mean!))

message 70: by мαr ♚ (new)

мαr ♚ | 186 comments Nevaeh looked up when the teacher walked in, hiding a smile when she heard Derek cough loudly, knowing that he had seen her tattoo. She remembered when she had attended high school-again-she hadn't shown Derek any of the tattoos she had, the one on her sides especially. The blonde always tried to keep her inked skin hidden from him, but now that they were in college she felt it only necessary to show the beautiful inking she had acquired at a young age-in vampire years-after her parents died, or rather that she had killed them. Nevaeh shuddered at the memory, her smile dropping immediately as her shoulders tensed up just from thinking of her parents, there was so much that Derek didn't know about her. Her secret, her parents, she remembered him often asking where they were when they were together, and she would always give some lie about them being on vacation in the Bahamas or on a business trip. Never the truth.

Ethan smiled when she shook his hand though it was barely a shake, pulling away afterward and shifting back into his normal position in his chair, arms resting on the desk in front of him. The teacher walked in with his heavy coat still on and his face pink from the cold air outside, he held in a chuckle. Ethan being a shape-shifter, much like werewolves-from what he had researched-could not get cold, his body temperature was always greater than any humans which is why he never went to the doctors. Because if he did they would wonder why he wasn't dead from his high temperature.

Derek shut his eyes tight, willing himself to wake up from this bizarre dream. He had never know that Nevaeh had tattoos; he had also never met her parents, or found out anything about her personal life. But that had been their whole relationship, always dancing around the unspoken; he had always felt like she was keeping something major from him, but he had never found out, probably wouldn't now. His eyes snapped open when the sounds of conversation died down; the professor had entered the room. His posture straightened as he uncapped his pen, messily scrawling the date.

Delaney could feel herself shudder when the professor dropped his briefcase on the desk. She could feel the cold emanating from him and his coat. Finally, she leaned forward, shrugging into her black pullover, wrapping it around her petite frame. While the professor got settled, she glanced over at the guy sitting next to her. She didn't understand how he could be warm in just a hoodie and sweats. But then the professor launched into his lecture, forcing her to scramble to keep up. They were in the middle of the American Civil War, and she was filling her notes with dates and names of battles.

An hour and a half later, the professor, a tall man with thinning black hair and a beaklike nose, cleared his throat and shuffled his notes, signaling the end of class. But then he raised a hand, quelling the noise of students preparing to leave. "I know you're all eager to leave, but this is important. I'm assigning group projects today." He crossed his arms as his eyes traveled over their faces. "You can do anything on this project; it can be on famous historical figures, a certain battle, or life for the people left behind. You can write a short movie, teach a lesson plan, or write an essay. But I warn you to choose wisely," he cautioned, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "This project is worth 40% of your final grade." People started chattering excitedly, already talking with their friends. Then all their hopes were dashed when he raised his hands for quiet, saying, "I know that you already have the perfect group in mind. Unfortunately, life doesn't work like that. You will be working in groups of four or five people. That I assign."

message 82: by мαr ♚ (new)

мαr ♚ | 186 comments Nevaeh straightened in her chair slightly as the professor spoke, listening to his lesson as the hour droned on slowly. She rested her chin in her left hand as she scrambled to write down her notes though she didn't need them with her extended, almost photographic memory. But she had to act like she was human, at least, until she figured out a way to get out of this college. But I can't leave, I have to get my education, she reminded herself, mentally groaning at the thought of going through all of the schooling it would take for her to become a middle school teacher. Something she had always wanted to do.

Ethan felt Delaney's eyes look over at him, only once when the class was coming to a close. Probably wondering how I'm not shivering right now, he thought already knowing that it was so. He let out a silent sigh, resting his chin in both of his hands as he listened to the professor teach. A quiet groan escaped his lungs when he heard that the teacher would be assigning group assignments and be choosing the group, he didn't have many friends in college so he was also halfway relieved that the professor would be choosing. The professor started listing off groups, Ethan waited for his name to be said. "Ethan, Derek, Delaney, and Nevaeh, you are a group," the professor announced before continuing with naming off the other groups.

Temperance ((I have returned!!! :) And for the project, did you want them to teach a lesson plan, or make a movie? I'm personally leaning towards the short movie. ^~^))

Derek had been about to book it when the professor cleared his throat, raising his hands for quiet. He collapsed back into his seat, letting the bag fall from his fingers as he folded his arm. He was a little apprehensive, since this project was worth such a large portion of his grade, but it was better than working a paper alone; he wasn't the strongest writer, so he was looking forward to working in a group. He had a few friends in the class, so they should be able to come up with something decent. But then he heard the professor's next words and his stomach sank. Derek could feel his jaw tighten as he sat in his desk, his back stiff. This had to be some sort of universal joke; first he had found Nevaeh in a crowded class of 115 people. Now he was working in the same group with her, and since the professor had a reputation for being a hard ass, there was no way to get assigned to another group; he only knew the other girl, Delaney, only vaguely, since she had dated a friend of his for a few months. He had hung out with Ethan a few times, but didn't really know him. Finally, Derek picked up his bag, waiting to find the others so they could figure things out; the sooner he did, the sooner he could put some space between him and Neveah.

Delaney pouted when the professor didn't let them go right away. She perched on the edge of her seat, her gaze bouncing between the door and the professor; she was supposed to meet Tiffany and Lori for a quick study session for their sociology midterm; it was some stupid requirement for her business degree, but she couldn't afford to screw up one grade. Things needed to be perfect....which was only emphasized when he brought up the group projects. She felt a twinge of apprehension fill her; she had two friends in this class, but neither were very bright. And, even though groans erupted in the seats behind her, she felt relieved. Now she wouldn't be forced to work with friends, or make up a bad excuse as to why she couldn't. Delaney smiled, shifting slightly in her seat to face Ethan. "Maybe this group thing won't be so bad." she said as she got to her feet, slipping her back pack over her shoulder. "At least I know you." She said, turning to look for the other two members of their group.

message 90: by мαr ♚ (new)

мαr ♚ | 186 comments ((I'm kinda leaning towards the short movie as well))
Nevaeh grounded her teeth together when she heard what group she would be in, just my luck and Derek and I will have to do half of the work together. She shook her head, she knew who Delaney was, being she was one of the most popular girls in Nevaeh's class. She gathered her things and stood up with the perfect grace only a vampire like herself possessed and walked around the room towards the front where she saw Delaney and with who she guessed was the other group member-Ethan, as the teacher had called him. Trying her best to avoid a bump-in with Derek while she was walking, eventually, she found her way to the front of the class, standing in front of Delaney and Ethan, Derek not having yet joined them.

Ethan looked over when Delaney spoke to him, he had just been about to bail when the teacher announced the groups. "Yeah, at least," he smiled a bit and stood up, gathering up his things in his backpack and swinging it over his left shoulder, rocking back and forth as he waited for the two other group members to come and meet with them. But with the class now being a sea of people it was hard to tell who was who, and it didn't help that he had never heard of the girl-Nevaeh-before. But he had known of Derek, hung out with him a few times, when it was possible. He almost jumped out of his skin when there was suddenly a petite blonde standing about a foot away from his shoulder, her florescent turquoise blue eyes throwing him off for a moment, making him have to give her a double-take. This must be Nevaeh, he thought.

message 91: by Temperance (new)

Temperance ((really? awesome!!! Wonder what they should focus on...))

Derek slowly wound his way through the mass of chattering students. They were everywhere, blocking the walkways and standing at the ends of rows, but it's not like he was in a hurry. As childish as it was, he wasn't eager to be stuck in a group with his ex. He could hear people complain about the assignment and the unfair arrangements, and while he would rather get hit by a truck, there wasn't anything he could do about it. At least it wasn't just going to be him; Delaney was fun, for the most part, and Clark was cool, just really quiet. Which suited him just fine; Derek wasn't really big on the whole 'small talk' thing. Too soon did he make his way to the front, each step hitting the musty carpet heavily; he felt like a man walking to his death. Which, once he saw Nevaeh again, couldn't be more true; it felt like his heart had been ripped open again, every wound reopened and bleeding. Delaney shrunk away from him when he got closer, edging closer to Ethan. He bit back a chuckle, knowing that the forbidding expression on his face was to blame. "Clark." he muttered, lifting his chin slightly as he stood before them, arms banded across his chest. "So what are we doing?"

Delaney turned slightly, rewarding him with a cheerful smile before she swung around, searching for their other group mates. She pouted, her lower lip sticking out slightly as she strained to see over the heads of their taller classmates. She didn't want to glance at the clock, but she wanted to get everyone's details so she could leave. Tiffany and Lori would be pissed if she was late. After a few more minutes of impatient waiting, a petite girl appeared at Ethan's side, causing the taller guy to jump. Delaney nearly did too; the other girl had come out of nowhere, probably because of her delicate build, which was like Delaney's. She frowned slightly as she crossed her arms, sizing the other girl up. Nevaeh was pretty and blonde, also like her, but she was slender in all the places Delaney had curves. Just then, Derek came in, sporting a fearsome growl; he had been Micah's friend, a guy she dated for a few months during freshman year and while he had been quiet, he had never been unpleasant. With a cautious glance towards him, Delaney dropped her arms, a cheerful smile on her face. "Ok, I know this sounds bitchy, but I have somewhere to be in... 10 minutes," she said, checking the time on her phone. "Can we trade numbers and pick a day to figure out what we're going to do?" Delaney asked, her expression hopeful.

message 92: by мαr ♚ (new)

мαr ♚ | 186 comments Nevaeh stuck her hand out to her two partners in a greeting, not even bothering to try to shake Derek's hand, knowing he would refuse it. "Hello, I am Nevaeh," she introduced herself, her voice holding a strange accent that had died off a millennium ago, she being the only person who still carried it with her. She shook hands with both Delaney and Ethan, better knowing him as Clark since that's what everyone called him. Her sharp eyes catching the two's surprised expression when they shook her ice cold hand, trying not to squeeze their hands too terribly hard. Delaney mentioned something about trading numbers and she was quick to respond, "I've already received Derek's number, so there is no need for him to give it to me again." She shifted her weight, a human habit she had picked up through the years.

Ethan looked over when the petite blonde offered her hand to him in a greeting, his eyebrows pulling together slightly as he listened to her strange accent, unlike any of the ones he had heard before. He nearly pulled away when he felt her ice cold hand shaking his, a shiver immediately traveling up his arm before she pulled away, her grasp surprisingly strong considering her size. His eyes moved quickly when he heard his nickname being used, seeing Derek arrive no sooner than Nevaeh had, nodding to him. "Derek." Shoving his hands in his pockets, Ethan nodded when Delaney suggested trading numbers. "Sure, mine's 406-333-9145," he told her, hoping everyone else had caught his number.

message 93: by Temperance (new)

Temperance Derek's expression hardened as Nevaeh shook hands with the others, his arms still crossed. He was glad she didn't offer her hand to him; he wouldn't have taken it. He watched the other's expression went from polite interest to shook as they briefly grasped her hands, one by one. The accent had thrown him when he first met her; it was like nothing he had ever heard before. It wasn't really English, but it wasn't exactly Irish. It was like some really old version of the two. He almost chuckled when he saw the look on Delaney's face; Nevaeh had always run cold, but he had been there to balance her out. He shrugged when Delaney said she had other places to be; to be honest, he didn't want to be there either. Then Derek remembered where he was and the feeling disappeared. He nodded along with Delaney's words; he didn't exactly want to be here either. He withdrew his phone, punching in Ethan's number. He waited, letting Delaney rattle off hers before turning to Neveah, lifting an eyebrow.

Delaney's expression mirrored Ethan's when Nevaeh lifted her hand. The other girl's accent was a little weird; it sounded European, but she had no idea where it was from. She waited, letting Ethan shake her hand before gingerly shaking hers. She had to stifle the yelp that threatened to emerge; she was freezing, like she had dipped her hand in ice water before walking out into a blizzard. She politely pulled her hand away to reach for her cellphone, glad that the others weren't mad that she wanted to ad the group meeting early. Her thumbs moved over the keys quickly, capturing his number. "Ok, mine's 406-...." she said, rapidly rattling off the other numbers. She turned to Derek, giving him a cheeky smile. "I already have yours, so I just need yours, Nevaeh," Delaney said, turning and giving the other girl an expectant smile.

((want to do a time skip to when they first meet up at the library to work on the project?))

мαr ♚ | 186 comments Nevaeh listened as the group rattled off their phone numbers, not bothering to write them down or put them in her expensive cell phone, she already had them memorized with her extended learning abilities. She folded her hands behind her back, looking up when she heard Delaney speaking to her. "Ah, yes, I apologize for not giving it sooner." Her hand flicked out from behind her back quickly, flicking a piece of her blonde hair that had fallen in her face from in front of her eyes. "The number you can reach me at is 406-838-2259." She listed off her phone number quickly, but not too quickly in order for everyone to catch it, though Derek wouldn't need to hear it, unless he had deleted her number, which he probably had. Her eyes met his evenly, the florescent turquoise blue seeming to smolder when he raised an eyebrow at her.

Ethan quickly pulled his phone out of his sweatshirt pocket and typed in everyone's numbers, he glanced over at Derek who hadn't given his yet. Feeling the extreme tension crackling through the air between him and Nevaeh, who's turquoise eyes seemed as if they were almost smoldering. He blinked rapidly, sort of shocked with what he saw, but the moment he blinked, the smoldering in her eyes stopped. And so he couldn't tell if it was just his imagination or if it was real, how strange, he thought as he glanced for Nevaeh to Derek and back again. A shiver running up his back as the tension cracked, Nevaeh breaking her eyes away from Derek's as if nothing had happened and examining her fingernails.
