It reminded me of Davida's Harp, a novel about a Jewish girl growing up in New York during the second World War. This one is about a Christian girl growing up in New York during the decade of the first World War. Both girls focus on school.Their reading habits were interesting. "A page of the Bible and a page of the Bard" every day, wasn't that how the aunt phrased it? Reflects the tenacity of the trees that grow through the asphalt in Brooklyn. And it paid off, too: by the time the kids were grown they had read Shakespeare's complete works several times.
