Sounds stressful !

I've just started the Sea Women, which is quite good ('Snow Flower and the Secret Fan', by the same author, is one of my favourite all-time novels), but I'm rather anxious about whether I can finish it by Saturday!

Yes Brian I think they author has got it about right !

A lot of the time Olivia's is just story padding and quit..."
David, don’t you think it is a refreshing change to have a different kind of duo ? I confess that I do, ok I am a bit taken with Sam, I really like his character.. and who knows what the author plans for this series

I'm finding the subject very interesting - my aunt has befriended a Ugandan family who is seeking asylum, and they were living in a hostel for new arrivals when I visited last summer. (Fortunately, it gets a lot of charitable funding and is much nicer than the one in the book - it's the schools in that city that have mould on the walls.) They've since moved to their own place and the mother has a job, so they're doing well, so long as she can get her asylum accepted. It's not a good time for asylum-seekers on either side of the pond, unfortunately.

David, I didn’t read anything to suggest Olivia does anything in an official capacity, I read it as Sam being a bit of a maverick and bending the rules very occasionally to gain some helpful insight. Interesting how we interpret things.
