The Hours The Hours question

I'm confused. What is the correlation of this book to Virgina Woolf's books?

First of all, "The Hours" was the working title for Woolf's novel "Mrs. Dalloway."

And the three central characters in "The Hours" were all affected by "Mrs. Dalloway." Virginia Woolf was writing "Mrs. Dalloway" in 1923 and struggling with her mental illness. Laura Brown is reading "Mrs. Dalloway" in 1949, while planning her husband's birthday party - and in the book, Clarissa Dalloway was planning a party. And in 1999, Clarissa Vaughan is also planning a party for her poet friend, Richard - mirroring many of the stream-of-consciousness thoughts of Clarissa Dalloway in the novel.

Me too, at first anyway.
Ended up really enjoying it as a kind of companion piece to the original in the same way that Wide Sargasso Sea wasn't really a continuation of Jane Eyre.
Still haven't gotten around to watching the movie though as I'm saving it for the day when I can finally get my head around the fact that the character in the Manhattan film shoot who might be Meryl Streep (in the Hours novel and a member of the royal family in Wolf's original) obviously can't be Meryl Streep, the famous actress, as she plays a different role in the film.
Confused? I still am, although I loved it anyway.

Ha ha. That was the part that threw me too when I saw the cast of the film. Still haven't gotten around to watching it so it remains a mystery. Perhaps I'll watch it tonight.

Loved this film too, but it did take two watches to understand all the correlations. Very creative screenplay.

I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one confused by this book.

The film is amazing. At one point I watched it three times. Once on its own, once with the director commentary, and once with commentary by the three main actresses. I've watched it many times and plan to do so again. There's so much there it never gets old.
