I'm about to dig into Gone with the Wind so I thought I'd share my initial thoughts before starting.

I've never read this book and I've never seen the film, but it's one of those things that seeps into your psyche now (a few years ago I watched the first six Star Wars movies all in one weekend and was amazed at how many lines come from them that I didn't realize!)

A few things I think I know:
-something about greens? or turnips? something about "as God is my witness we'll never be hungry again" but this might be in the movie
-"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" (again, is this just in the movie?)
-Tara, which I think is the name for the land/plantation
-fire!

Well, that's about it. I think it's set in Savannah, which I've been to a few times now that I live in the south. I think the difference between Savannah and Charleston (so the story goes) is that General Sherman couldn't bear to see Charleston burn but had no problem burning Savannah?

So here we go!

Jeff Koeppen (jeff_koeppen) | 181 comments I also had never read it before or seen the movie. I’m 18 hours in to it and I can’t believe how good it is.

Shatterlings | 47 comments My mum made me watch the movie but that was a long time ago and I don’t remember much. I have a feeling there’s going to be racism. And that it’s going to be a historical romance in parts, not a thing I read really. I also wonder if Americans or people more familiar with the civil war will pick up things that me being in the UK won’t.

Casey | 96 comments I've never read this either. Stop judging me.
I do remember slivered parts of the film, I saw it once a very long time ago, but nothing of any true substance lingers beyond how much the protagonist annoyed me due to a perceived undercurrent of manipulation. Whether this was true to the text or just something from the film, I'll be curious to see.

Associations/recollections:
* Fire
* the line "don't give a damn"
* Tara – name of plantation
* Sweeping staircase

I'm about to begin!

Robin Gustafson | 54 comments I've never read the novel, but have seen the classic film. I've also seen Carol Burnett's classic comedy sketch version called "Went With the Wind". Looking forward to finally reading the novel!

Ha, ha! I remember that as well. I had no idea it related to something that happens in the book.

If we can help with any of that USA stuff, let me know. I definitely think I'm picking up on even more of that now that I live in South Carolina. I mean heck, in my town we have a Wade Hampton street and a Wade Hampton high school (well, and a relative of the founder of the institution where I work drafted the document of secession....)

Tara shows up pretty early on, but I realized when I read it out loud last night I didn't know if it was a long or short A.....

Ooh that sounds like required watching.

I plan on doing things in this order:

Read Gone with the Wind
Read the chapter in My Reading Life where Pat Conroy talks about his mother's love of Gone with the Wind
Watch the movie
Watch the Carol Burnett sketch, apparently! :)
