Discuss Chapter 8 - Chapter 10

NOTE: While this section is meant to focus on the specified chapters of this book, this read is meant for people who have already read the entire series.

As a result, unlike most of our group reads, full spoilers for the series will be allowed without spoiler tags in every discussion post.

If you haven't read some/all of the books (What's wrong with you?) proceed at your own peril.

Already on part 3? I know it's a short book, but you'll be done before we've officially started.

Though this sounds like maybe part 2?

Dara (cmdrdara) Ah damn yeah. Posted in the wrong thread. That's what I get for posting from my phone!

Fail. Turn in your wand.

message 6: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) Nooooooo!

Fun fact: I have Hermione's wand from the park at Universal.

What's your punishment for forgetting Daedalus Diggle? ;)

I posted that in the right thread.

:-)

Richard Eyres (richardeyres) So far, every time Hermione has turned up, it has just annoyed Harry and Ron. No real indication that she is a major character in the series.
Enjoyable read still.

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments Haha sorry, stupid phone. Or stupid person using the phone, either way.

Some really good stuff in it, and Halloween is probably my favorite chapter in the book. Love how the three of them cement their friendship and the closing line is great

Dara (cmdrdara) Ch. 8
-What classes would you be more interested in taking? Transfiguration and Charms for me. Don't have much interest in Potions but Herbology would be cool as well.

-Harry is already piecing together the mystery of Vault 713. The clipping revealed that the vault was emptied on 31st of July and Harry figured out that the thief was after whatever Hagrid removed. Harry is wondering where the package is and also why Snape hates him. Hagrid knows why and won't tell him. I think all Hagrid knows is that James and Snape were rivals in school. He doesn't know about Snape's involvement with Lily.

Ch. 9
-Hermione is really a insufferable know-it-all at this point. Bossily telling Harry and Ron what to do, even though she's right, and just being all-around annoying.

-Fluffy! Harry knows where the package is hidden, thanks to Hermione being observant and Malfoy tricking them.

Ch. 10
-Hermione becomes their friend and it's quite sweet. God knows they'd be lost without her in the later books.

-Snape is heading to the forbidden 3rd floor corridor while the troll is loose. Red herring!

Potions if not for Snape and transfiguration for me.

Oh and I love the flying lesson. Quidditch is one of my favorite parts of the series. I wish there was more of it. I can't wait until the actual game. I think I could read a whole book on it.

Hey unlike a normal group read, I didn't yell at you. I mocked you instead. :-P

message 16: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) I also love Quiddich. I'd read a book on it as well.

I got lucky because spoilers are allowed.

message 17: by Meera (new)

Meera I'm only up to chapter 9 and I didn't remember Hermione being so annoying. But Malfoy is as nasty as I remember.

A bezoar is mentioned. Isn't that used for something? "

It comes up a few times, including Harry using one to save Ron's life and in the 6th book to impress Slughorn.

And the fake version of Quidditch people play just makes me sad. Then again, I'm not sure I could handle flying on a broomstick, so maybe it would be better for me.

message 19: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) Imagine how horrible Harry's childhood was that his first thought when McGonagall goes to get Wood is that he thinks that he is going to get beaten. Seriously. So sad.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

It seems McGonagall arranged the broom for him. The Nimbus is never really addressed, it just sort of arrived. There was a note from McGonagall telling him not to open it at the breakfast table.

Sirius sends him the Firebolt, but thats after the Whomping Willow does a number on the Nimbus in Book 3.

message 21: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) When Sirius sends Harry the Firebolt, he puts it in Harry's name but has the gold removed from Sirius's own vault (he tells Harry this in the letter he sends at the end of the book). I imagine McGonagall did something similar.
