Melanie How is everyone getting on with this one? I'm still on Volume One. It's quite dry, but you have appreciate the snark. :)

message 52: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) I love the snark. I imagine this is how my sisters and I would talk if we lived back then

Sarah | 342 comments It took me multiple tries to read this when I finally decided to a few years ago. It is one of my mother's favorites, but I just couldn't get in to it.

Jay | 18 comments I've been listening to the audiobook of this and I'm not sure I'd continue if I was reading the book. Admittedly, the "Trials and Tribulations of young upperclass women in the 1800s" aspect is not that appealing. As that is what seems to be the plot so far, it isn't very engaging for me.

HOWEVER, my god does Austen's dry wit shine through like diamonds in the rough. There's been a handful of times where something a character says (usually Elizabeth or Darcy) just has me chuckling. So I'm trying to sit back and not care about the plot too much and just enjoy the dialogue - that would be a lot harder for me to do if I wasn't listening to the audiobook so I'm thankful that I am.

Betsy | 930 comments Jay, I totally get why the trials and tribulations of young women in the 18th century doesn't seriously interest you, that comment had me laughing.
But that's great to hear that YOU'RE laughing from Austen's wit, and that the audio is enabling this experience.

Hello Readers!
This is the Pre-Read thread for the June 2021 Catch-up selection. This month we will be reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen for the 2nd time.

Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.

Who's planning to join in on this read? Is this a first-time read, or a re-read of an old favorite? What are your expectations in picking this book up?

message 57: by Lauren Shelton (new)

Lauren Shelton | Cowtown Reads (imlaurenshelton) | 2 comments I’m excited to read Pride and Prejudice for the first time! I haven’t seen the film yet either, so I’m looking forward to reading then watching the movie - would love to have a virtual movie night with some of y’all after reading if anyone is interested!

message 58: by Craig (new)

Craig | 2 comments Hi! I'm new to EHRTM, and what perfect timing! P&P has been on my list for years, so this will be great for me.

I'm looking forward to this!

message 59: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin (kruemel89) | 2 comments I am *thrilled* that we will be reading this book! It’s probably my #1 favorite. This is the book I turn to when life gets crazy. And every time it helps me breathe and get some distance to the day to day chaos - like a good talk with an old friend. I usually read it once a year.

The first time I ever read this book was the first time I truly understood why some books are considered masterpieces! I won’t give anything away, but I will say this: this book is much more than just a love story.

I hope you will all enjoy this book as much as I do. If anyone prefers the AUDIOBOOK: I can recommend the Amazon prime production read by Rosamund Pike. It’s my favorite, and it’s included with Prime. If you are willing to venture into FILM ADAPTIONS after you read the book, do yourself a favor and watch the full 6h BBC mini series with Collin Firth. The 2005 movie with Keira Knightly has a great cast and music, but the story is pretty altered, whereas the BBC version follows the book almost word for word.

Now get to reading everyone, you don’t want to miss out on this one! 😉

Bethany (beth-ever-reading) | 5 comments Glad I saw this before you guys started reading, I have P&P as one of my current reading but I didn't get very far with it as I had to read one page of my book and then a page of a modern version online to understand a lot of the writing. So it will be good for me to start again and discuss it with people and find things I didn't realise before. For example I've heard people say a lot of it is meant to be satire but unfortunately I couldn't pick a lot of it up.

And then after these I'll finally be able to watch the movies and compare them!

message 61: by fleurette (new)

fleurette | 198 comments I'm definitely in. I had been planning to read this book for years, but there was always something else to read. I'm glad that I finally have an excuse not to put it off again.

message 62: by fleurette (new)

fleurette | 198 comments I finished this book early in the week. And wow I'm surprised how much I liked it. I was expecting something different - more serious tone, more drama - but I liked what I found in this book so much more. It hasn't aged a bit, it can still give you a lot of fun.

Here's my spoiler-free review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 63: by Shelley (new)

Shelley I listened to the audiobook several years ago and remember staring at my CD player, calculating the hours left, and wondering if I would actually finish it. It's just not my style of literature.

Don't let me discourage you from reading it, though. Many people love this book and its author. Just not everyone.

Here you can comment, without spoilers, on any aspects of the book, either before, during, or after reading it.

message 65: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Ramsay (eramsay) | 9 comments I have seen the movie. I know lines from the book but I have never actually read the book and this seems like a travesty in my life that must be corrected.

message 66: by Tom (new)

Tom Haydon | 2 comments I’ve never read Austen before, but I’m immediately liking how witty she is. Just read the first few chapters to get into it and the characters are already clear and memorable.

Pony Xaviors (ponyxaviors) | 627 comments My sister loved this book and has been wanting me to read it. I haven't actually read any Jane Austen before.

message 68: by Siera (new)

Siera Raynor | 1 comments I just finished Pride and Prejudice two days ago and joined this group today. What luck! It was so good I’m eager to read Sense and Sensibility

message 69: by Jan (new)

Jan Z (jrgreads) | 405 comments Sierra, if you are looking for humor, try Emma or Northanger Abbey next. Persuasion is a tale of second chances and the most romantic. The love letter is swoon worthy.

message 70: by dilay (new)

dilay (dilayscn) i‘m currently reading this and am like 170 pages in but it‘s such a tough read for me :/

message 71: by Pony (new)

Pony Xaviors (ponyxaviors) | 627 comments I'm 149 pages in and loving it!! 🤩

message 72: by Pony (new)

Pony Xaviors (ponyxaviors) | 627 comments I just finished it today. I'm in love 😍
