Who was your favorite character?
Did you identify with anyone in the book?
What do you think makes us behave in a certain way to tramatic events in our lives as opposed to a different course? Can you name one event in your life that helped shape the person you have become?

Jack was my favorite character. It’s hard to imagine a child picking up the pieces after losing his mother so tragically and managing his fathers inability to move on. It was nice to see him let go of the anger and move on with his life as best as possible given the previous three years.

I think people respond differently to traumatic events based on possible predispositions and/or a history of trauma. I think maturity plays a role. Jack, for example, was very young, but had been exposed to several traumatic events in his life and always took action. Joy, on the other hand was frozen in her grief after losing her mother, then her father causing her obsession with the newspapers.
