No..it is a normal tree and its branches are way bent into the river to symbolise the man searching for his lover in the river

The story begins with the narrator looking out through his window at a tree on the bank of a river. He tells his friend that the tree was once a man and its lover drowned in the same river while they were escaping in a boat which capsized when a boulder was thrown at it by the chasing aliens(I do not remember what they are exactly, but they are not human). The man searched for his lover vigorously and swam to the bank when he could not find her. He kept looking for her and became a tree with its branches immersed into the river still looking for his lover.
The narrator then tells the remaining story of the lovers.
