ABANDONED. Trying to find the name of a book

Hey there, first time poster, ive been trying to remember a book i read and its doing my head in for the past few months so i decided to post on here. So im a bit hazy on the details but ill give it my best go.
On the cover is a beach or deck chair. The book is about a family in a small town who trys to/adopts a child. I think one of the parents is a author. The kid they adopt has a bit of a temper. I think the dad went to a school and he often recalls memorys and one of them is how he or his friend had a crash after prom and killed a friend. Ill try remember more and addon but thats all i can remember at the moment. Thanks heaps
