Well, riveting them does help stop them falling off the perch.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Are they standing on top of fish then? And isn't riveting them to the fish a bit cruel?

1. Yes.
2. No, the fish like it as they usually find it very hard to make friends. And, as Sir David Attenborough pointed out in his most recent nature series, perch are fascinated by magnets and the rivets make it much easier for them to find magnets in even the muddiest of rivers.

That's good to hear. It would be a shame if all the old traditions died out.

Yes. If you check the underside of each perch you will find a sticker placed there personally by the great man himself demonstrating his personal approval.

Maybe I should take up public speaking.

It is rather a shame that most people get their science information from the press releases 'reinterpreted' by the press which often - at best - garbles the science, and at worst totally misrepresents it.

Jim | 21809 comments One genuine problem is that so much of science, the original papers that you need to write a good article, are now hidden behind a pay wall.

The situation is worse now than it was in the 1990s!

Although there are attempt to bring it out more in to the open on the internet, but no-one knows how successful it will be.
