Jaycee Singleton Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys is by far my ALL TIME FAVORITE! This amazing story is not only a great plot, but it’s also a true story. Getting that mix of story and a historical background is a great combination. Lina, the main character is living with her happy family until one night the Soviets came and ripped her family apart. Lina, her mother and her brother all travel to a work camp where they are forcing many other families to go. At these work camps, and with Stalin as their ruler, Lina and her family have to survive under horrible conditions where they have to fight for their will to live.
Lina loves to draw and art has become her only escape from the messed up world in which she now lives in.
Lina, her mother, and her little brother all have one goal in mind, and that is to make it to Lina’s father’s prison camp. This long journey is heart wrenching. I loved this book and I will be reading it again.
We are often in school when we learned about this time in history. We read from textbooks, and watch dated films, but reading this book about a young girl on the inside is definitely a different point of view. It gives you a different perspective on how people in those work camps felt and the daily struggles that they had. This is definitely a time in history that we will never forget. And after reading this book, it is definitely one I will never forget.
