I know I read this in the last 2 years or so, and I'm pretty sure it's a Stephen King short story. It's about an unnamed man - serial killer- who breaks into houses & kills people, has been doing this for a very long time and is now pretty old and goes on one last spree, but he can't remember if it was real or not. The reader doesn't know by the end of the tale, either. I was reminded of it by reading Red Dragon, by Thomas Harris. Very similar type of crime being committed.

Did you read it as part of an anthology or in a magazine? Do you have any sense of whether it was new at the time you read it, or might it have been an older story? Do you remember who he kills on this final spree (which may or may not have really happened)?
Thanks for the replies. Yes, it was part of an anthology. I know I read it last year, but it could've been much older than that. The victims are a nameless family; he breaks in in the middle of the night, through the back door, and kills as he moved through the house. It was in third person narrative.
It isn't 'Strawberry Spring' in Night Shift. I really thought it was Stephen King, but I could be wrong. I don't read all that much horror/serial killer stuff.

Perhaps one of the stories in either Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales or
Nightmares And Dreamscapes ?
I think it must not have been a Stephen King short story. I've read plot descriptions of all of his short stories and haven't found it. I'm stumped.
