SOLVED. Book about 7 layers of Hell, read in the 90s [s]

Trying to find a book I read in the 90s. It was about a man who ??fell into/went into a old building and somehow ended up being taken on a tour of hell by an angel? There were 7 layers (similar to Dante) One level I remember was for suicides..they were symbolized by telephone poles whose wires were not connected. I think there was also something about people running round and round and round but the race never ending..

Inferno starts off with a minor-league SF writer accidentally falling off a hotel window ledge at a convention. Not sure of the rest of the details as I read it a long time ago and no longer have it. Here is a link to the Wikipedia entry as it might help
