There are several story lines, a historical one about a man who can make rain fall - some if his story involves dressing in traditional Native American clothing and performing a "rain dance" in a traveling carnival some involves actually making it rain at the request of poor farmers. And 2 contemporary lines - the mother living on the family homestead with her blind sister. When book opens there has just been a bad storm and a stranger with amnesia and badly burned feet shows up on their property. The mother is doing a lot of reflecting on her life and relationships and remembering a young man she was good friends with in highschool, seems like there may have been some romance here - he goes away to be a missionary just when she finds out that she is pregnant. There are some chapters about the missionaries experiences in the 3rd world country where he is serving - he discovers that he can make rain fall from the sky and does so to assist farmers in the drought stricken area until he is captured by soldiers. Also the woman's daughter who is a young woman And has moved to the city, discovers she is pregnant after big fight with her boyfriend she leaves city to go to mothers house in country - there is no cell phone service at mothers. The walnut tree hasn't borne any nuts since major lightening strike many years ago. Seems like there was a shower of nuts at some point surrounding the mysterious strangers arrival
