what is the best version?
amazon links appreciated

Depends what you're looking for.

People generally agree there's a spectrum from "readable" to "literal". I think Pevear & Volokhonsky are too far to the literal end, and Briggs and maybe Dunnigan are too far to the readable end; I don't really want the English vocabulary to be updated to contemporary English because I think old books should sound old. My choice would be the Mandelker version of the Maude translation, published by Oxford in 2010.

I just finished the Penguin version which was translated by Anthony Briggs. It was easy to follow and had some very beautiful passages.
