Casey Paulucci | 9 comments For the Newbery Medal review number 7, I chose the novel, "It's Like This, Cat" by Emily Neville. The reason why I choose this book was because who doesn't like cats? I guess dog people, but that's besides the point. This story is about a guy named Dave Mitchell who lives in New York City. Dave grows up alongside a stray cat that he got from Crazy Kate (who saved him from getting hit by a car). She's the crazy cat lady in case you were wondering by the way. Throughout the story the cat whose name is also, "cat", brings him to various places throughout New York City. Eventually the cat brings him into contact with Mary who he met at Coney Island when he was on a trip with his friend Nick (his friend since childhood). This book is great for children, teenagers, and adults. I had a very fun time reading this book simply because the story was not too far fetched. Plus, there is also a cat. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in New York City, because Emily does describe some iconic, but not so iconic places in New York that are worth the research. Or for someone who has an interest in cats and just wants a good story to read. The moral of the story was very interesting to me and did not expect it to be as meaningful as it did. I would recommend this book to someone who is having trouble at home as well, because of the moral of the overall novel. Tom (his father) and Dave don't always get along and by the end of the book they still don't. As much. But, Dave ends up understanding his father a little better than before because of his adventures with Cat. Anyone who starts to understands where their parents are coming from knows that feeling that this book portrays!
