ABANDONED. unknown book?

looking of a book I have read something like twenty years ago, but I can not remember the title of the book, so some help from anyone please. There is a man who has hypnosis abilities uses his abilities who robs people using his abilities through phone calls.

So the man just calls the people has them open the door for him; robs them and then makes them forget that he was ever there, and makes them call the police and tell them that they wee robbed by a complete stranger. He get away scott free.

I'm not so sure about the robbing, but this is very similar to From the Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz.
