Michaela Weston | 9 comments For the nonfiction novel I chose to read #NotYourPrincess by Lisa Charleyboy and Mary Beth Leatherdale and I was not disappointed in my choice one bit. This novel was full of stories, testimonies, poems, art, and so much more that told the stories of Native American women. The stories of being shoved down in society by stereotyping, degradation, and so much more. Not only is there stories of the negative that these women encountered but stories of strong, beautiful women who want to implement change and dominance. I am not a woman of color, or a woman who has been humiliated due to her ethnicity but I am a woman who has been humiliated and shamed simply for being a woman. This compilation of stories was well-worded and captivating from beginning to end. It was a bit challenging for me to read as it jumped around a bit and didn’t all follow the same story line. I did not know a lot about Native American culture, and this book gave me insight into the lives of different Native American women which was able to expand my understanding and appreciation for the culture. I would recommend this non-fiction novel to really anyone honestly, it was the perfect mixture of uplifting and encouraging to devastating and upsetting. I truly wish there were more pages in this novel as I feel it began and ended way too quickly. It truly is an educational novel as there are many different types of writing expressed by many different women and many different perspectives, from poems to essays this book offers it all. Amazing read!
