Jaycee Singleton I recently just finished the book, Hey, Kiddo by Jarrett J. Krosoczka and I loved it. Krosoczka, the main character, lives with his two grandparents due to having a mother who was addicted to drugs. Krosoczka did not know much about his father, let alone where me might be today. One day, while registering for his school trip, he gets the chance to see his father’s name on his birth certificate. From there, Krosoczka goes on a search for his father and is taken on a wild journey along the way. This book was a National Book Award Finalist, which was very deserving. It pulls at your heart strings as you look down the path of a very unusual this child had to live. Not all families are the same, and learning how some families are made up, and quite eye-opening. The illustrations throughout the book go along great with how you picture the story. For instance, it is clear when we see Krosoczka crying out for his mother, no matter how bad she may have been for him. I would definitely recommend this book not only to young readers, but also to adults who could use a unique story. This book is great for children who may struggle with drug addict parents and do not live with them anymore. It shows them that they are not alone and that there are other children going through the same situations that they are. Not everyone’s family is perfect, and that is an important lesson within itself.
