Need help finding a book but don't know the title or author:

Beginning of book takes place in Africa where 2 medical students are giving medical care to the poor. They fall madly in love and have a passionate affair. I don't remember why they didn't stay together but they both wound up marrying other people. He became a Dr. but I don't remember what she did. He married a cellist I believe and she married a wealthy man. In the end her husband reaches out to him because she has brain cancer or something....
I loved this book and read it several times many years ago before I lost it.
