Additional details:
Civilization resembles Victorian English culture, with a system of knights and a queen if I recall correctly. The family, when the children are still kids, ride through a train. The creatures of the darkness are explained to the children as a sort of boogeyman.
Spoilers:
The daughter embarks on a journey into the region of darkness with a research team. There, they find remains that suggest that the creatures of darkness had a culture of sorts and find primitive artwork depicting the humans as monsters/invaders from the light, throwing everyone who bought the whole "dark creatures = monster" idea in for a loop.
