Gaolise | 2 comments The short story was part of a "Best of Fantasy/Sci-fi" anthology in the late 2000's. Bonus points for finding the anthology as well since the collection had quite a few great stories. Including a story about an old self-driving car that protects his family from an accident.

Additional details:

Civilization resembles Victorian English culture, with a system of knights and a queen if I recall correctly. The family, when the children are still kids, ride through a train. The creatures of the darkness are explained to the children as a sort of boogeyman.

Spoilers:

The daughter embarks on a journey into the region of darkness with a research team. There, they find remains that suggest that the creatures of darkness had a culture of sorts and find primitive artwork depicting the humans as monsters/invaders from the light, throwing everyone who bought the whole "dark creatures = monster" idea in for a loop.

You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 181 where fewer eyes will see it. Get back in the game! Bump!
You can do this by typing a new comment at the end of the thread, or even by typing the word "bump."
Good luck!
