a sci fi YA novel about a group of teens in an apocalyptic scenario that are trying to flee from the power of a hive mind created as a result of new technology. I remember border crossings, and at the end of the story one of the character dies when trying to infiltrate the hive mind through the new technology, and another character succeeds after doing essentially the same thing. there was a comparison made that the character that succeeded 'became' the new hive mind and brushed away the fears of the old one as if it was a child. I read it around 2012 approximately. it reminds me of books like maze runner and the hunger games in the sense its a struggle against authority. any help would be appreciated

Sounds like it might be the Tripods trilogy.
i dont think thats it, the hive mind was a human-born thing, ie a cause of human technology

Have you tried the Prisoners of Peace series by Erin Bow? It's not an exact fit, but there are teens being held and watched over by AI. Some of the teens try to escape and one ends up becoming integrated with the mind and tries to rule better. The first book is The Scorpion Rules
