Can you tell us more about the couple - their ages, jobs/skills/interests, kids, family/friends, how they met, how long were they married, etc.?
How did she die? (Spoilers are okay - just give us a clear warning before revealing a spoiler, or use the html spoiler tag.)

The time period is modern. The couple is older - middle aged at least. No kids, not sure how long they were married. I remember it being set in America. The wife is dead at the beginning of the novel, so no spoilers, but I believe it was some sort of accident? Very unexpected, at least.
Also, I remember there was direct on the cover, so maybe it wasn't garbage, maybe plants?

Plot: A man is becoming a hermit in his home after his wife dies. He often reminisces about his dead wife who was very abusive towards him in hindsight. He believes he can still hear her and he finds all these terrible notes she left about wanting to hurt and kill him. One note I remember distinctly was about her rubbing his head in order to find a soft spot so she could kill him that way. At the end of the novel, firefighters find him in his home dead, having shoved paper into his mouth until he died.
Style: Weird fiction - the setting is realistic, but the narrative is confused. Definitely for adults and NOT YA. Very dark and twisty novel, unreliable narrator.
Cover: The paperback version of the cover was mostly red, it looked the title (which is one word I think) is nested amongst garbage or papers.
Read: Sometime in early 2014, was not a new release at the time.
