Theresa | 15662 comments This muse was triggered by 2 things: visiting the superb Tolkien exhibit at The Morgan Library & Museum, then reading a short article about Ian Rankin and his love of contemporary tapestry. It led my mind down some winding paths.

The Tolkien exhibit displayed many of his original artworks, from full water color illustrations, to heraldry, to doodles on newspaper ads and columns, made while contemplating a crossword clue. They revealed just how gifted an artist he was, I was drawn back to one gorgeous work after another, over and over. Even though I had seen most of the illustrations reproduced, those pale compared to the vibrancy of the originals. I am delighted of course that he stuck to writing, but I do think he could have paid the bills as an artist or illustrator too.

I was reminded of J.K. Rowling's lovely pen-and-ink sketches for her Harry Potter books that were part of the NY Historical Society History of Magic series. Again, a true gift for drawing was on display.

Tapestry...not something men tend to become passionate about. In Rankin's case, his wife is a weaver, founder of and artistic group of contemporary artist weavers in Edinburgh, where an exhibit of member works is currently being shown. Thus, through his wife did Rankin come to love it. Nor quite what you picture when reading a Rebus book, is it?

Has anyone else stumbled across anything similar?

KateNZ | 4104 comments On a related note, apparently Alexander McCall Smith had the idea for (and helped finance) the Great Scottish Tapestry (which is an embroidered tapestry like the Bayeux, not a woven tapestry). It’s going to be housed in a purpose-built new centre in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders. Which is really neat because, God knows, Gala’ needs some investment and something to pull visitors in: there’s nothing else there... I’ll have to call in next time I’m heading that way to see my sister :)

Holly R W | 3141 comments It turns out that writer Amy Tan likes to draw and enjoys nature. She has posted some of her works on Face Book and they are quite good (pictures of birds, etc.)

Though not a writer, the younger President Bush has a talent for painting. There is a book published of his colorful paintings of portraits of veterans that he has gotten to know.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8442 comments Amy Tan, Stephen King and a few other authors have a rock band called "The Rock Bottom Remainders." I think they only play for conventions / charity events.

Karin | 9250 comments I'm hitting myself in the head, figuratively speaking, because I recently read about an author I read who is multi-talented. I will be back when I think of who it is!

I believe Barbara Kingsolver is part of that band!
