ebook pagination

I'm reading an ebook that retains the pagination given in the printed edition (264 numbered pages) but which (as a PDF) has a total of 274 pages. Some of these additional pages (270-274 of the PDF) are the publisher's advertisements (while the first four pages of the PDF version are the cover and preliminary, unpaginated, pages of the print edition). Going by the Librarian Manual, these preliminary and advertising pages should not be included in the page count.

However, looking back through some earlier posts, it seems that ebooks are treated differently, partly because pagination varies according to the device used to read them, and the solution is to use the publisher's given pagination as stated on its Web site (in this case, 276 pages!). This makes sense, but where the print edition's pagination is retained, should this not be used in preference?

The PDF page numbers should conform to the usual page number format ie, we don't include ads for other books etc.

We use PDF as the pagination doesn't change re font size regardless of what device, whereas epubs do change depending on device and font used.

I have several thousand PDFs and always use them as page numbers as the publisher nearly always adds in things we don't count, that is the same for print editions.

When using PDF for page numbers don't forget to state that in the change comment box.

Good point! Otherwise someone will change it back to the publisher count, because they might think it is incorrect.

Thanks Sandra. So, in other words, I should ignore the PDF pagination of 274 pages and revise the GR entry with the print edition's 264 pages? This could be noted in the change comment box as you suggest.

If you have the ebook, you use the PDF numbers from the actual ebook, whatever they may be.

From your example you use the last numbered page of the book & add any pages that GR would normally count, such as author bio, index, glossary etc. You stated that the publisher advert started on page 270, so depending on what is on page 269, perhaps that would be the page count for this ebook edition.

You don't use the print edition numbers, as that is against policy.

And definitely state that you used the PDF numbers in the comment box.
