T.M.B.A. Corbett (tmbacorbett) | 2 comments I am not sure if this is the right forum but this issue has been bothering me since it happened. I am in a street team for an author whose books always end up on amazon top selling list and she has also been an usa today best seller. Well, I am also on her ARC team. She held a contest back in 2015 to name one of her characters. I did not win the contest. I think she was gonna giveaway paperbacks of her books signed to the winners but I do not remember. I didn't care about the items she was giving away. Then the next book in her series comes out and the name I gave her, which was my nephews name that hasn't been used in the US for 200 years so it is unique, was used for one of the new main characters.... So she did use the name I provided and I am upset because she did not acknowledge me at all. Not via email, not in her books thanks or dedication page. She also wrote a novella about the character and named the novella after the character, so every time I see it I am upset. I know she got the name from me via email for that contest and I never got a thank you, so every time I see the novella or read the new books in the series it puts me in a bad mood. I actually have not read the last book in the series because I am upset about this.
Should I be upset?
Honestly if I would have gotten an email from her saying "hey I am going to use the name you submitted in the contest for one of my characters so thank you", I would not be upset.

Depending on how much time has passed between the contest, your suggestion, and the book coming out, it could be down to a very simple human problem: she's forgotten where the name may have come from.

I do this all the time - I read about something, or make a note of the information because it's interesting, then weeks, months, years later, I will remember the nugget of info, but couldn't tell you where I picked it up from. Just a thought.

And that is fair. It's annoying to have a suggestion outright ignored or unacknowledged, yet it seems to shift the conversation anyway.
