Town- or base-building: (another rec request) what is the original book/story?

(Another req request.) I'll be done with The Slime Dungeon this week so I'm looking for my next progenitor of some of the major tropes.

Well, I mean, The Land by Aleron Kong has a lot of town building, although the building up is a bit slow, since he has to manually find villagers.
There's also Ascend Online by Luke Chmilenko, and The Divine Dungeon by Dakota Krout

Yep, read The Land and yes you're right it does have the Mist village (IIRC). Is that the prototypical example? Are there earlier ones (the other ones you mentioned come later)?

Earlier? I think the earliest ones are Play to Live by D. Rus and Way of the Shaman by Vasiliy Mahanenko (generation 0, as it were). I can't recall what came in between The Land and gen 0, but Ascend Online and Divine Dungeon definitely came after. Don't get me wrong, Ascend Online is core LitRPG, and Divine Dungeon I think was one of the first, if not THE first, Dungeon Core LitRPG

While all of the series have this at one point or another, if you want to go really to the beginning, you really need to look at Guardians of the Flame.

From a GameLit perspective it's Dragon's Wrath.
