Casey Paulucci | 9 comments For the 5th book on the list I chose to read Buck: A Memoir by M.K. Asante. I chose this book based alone from the cover page. I guess you could say I judged a book by it's cover and boy I am glad that I did so. This book was about personal memoirs of Asante's life growing up. His mother, a teacher, would tell him during his upbringing that, "they are looking for black boys to put into the system". Throughout the book I was just fascinated by not only the storytelling, but how everything flowed together. Also, I am a very big hip hop fan and Asante throws in dozens of 90's rap lyrics into his stories. Throughout the story you get a personal inside look at how his life was and is very similar to multiple African American children growing up. From his father leaving do to financial problems, to his brother getting a very long prison sentence. This book has very relate able material to it. I could definitely see myself using this as a mental text for students who are having a hard time with everyday life. Or who might now be growing up in great environments. Anyways love this book and I think you will too!
