ABANDONED. Children's chapter book about an Attic and Kismet. Read in late 90s/early 2000s.

I'm searching for a book that I would have read in the late 90s/early 2000s. I'm fairly certain that it was not a new book at the time, perhaps published in the late 80s? It's a chapter book (about a 3rd/4th Grade Level) about two girls who meet and become best friends. They find a secret attic in one of their houses. In that attic, they find memorabilia that tells them about either their parents or their town (I can't recall, sorry!). Throughout their friendship, they talk a lot about "kismet," the idea that they were fated to meet each other. I think they also go get milkshakes one day....

I'm fairly certain that it wasn't part of a series either.
