Johanna Ellwood (jpellwood) | 236 comments Does anyone subscribe to any monthly/quarterly book boxes, like Book of the Month, Cozy Reader Club or OwlCrate? It looks like there are tons out there. If so, which ones and do you think it's worth it?

Katy M | 960 comments I used to be a member of the History Book Club, if that's the kind of thing you're asking about. I almost never wanted the automatic book, but I did order some from time to time. The trouble was sometimes I forgot to cancel the monthly. You can return within so many days, but I always hate doing that when it's my fault. So, I guess, no, it wasn't really worth it.

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1756 comments I have tried Illumicrate, FairyLoot, Wildest Dreams and Ninja Book Box. However I've not currently got any active subscriptions because I just had too much stuff from them and I am terrible at reading the books. I liked the Illumicrate book selections the most but they have just gone from quarterly to monthly and I just think it's a bit too much money for an every month thing.

It's nice to have them now and again, especially if you can guess the book and just order a one off. The extra bits and pieces can be a bit hit and miss though. There's only so many notebooks and candles one can use!

I'd be more likely to try a small publisher subscription, where you only get the book and it's not that frequent.

Alison (a1ison74) | 27 comments I did Fairyloot for a while and they were really good for the most part. The items you got were good quality and it feels like a little community with the monthly twitter chats about the book (often with the author) and the Instagram photo challenge.

The reason I stopped was mostly the cost but also the books, I either already had them or never got around to reading them. I worked out for the cost of the subscription I could just buy a couple of new release hardbacks that I actually wanted and scout Etsy for some bookish merch (I have a bookish mug addiction).

I'd consider a one off purchase or special edition box but wouldn't take out another subscription.

Jena Best | 1 comments I've done Book of the Month since November and I really enjoy it!

Samantha (bookstasamm) | 182 comments I've done Book of the Month since last year and really like it. I like that you get to pick your book(s) each month rather than just being sent something. In my opinion, it's worth the price.

Charlotte | 74 comments I've done Book of the Month for a couple of months now and I really like it.

Johanna Ellwood (jpellwood) | 236 comments Thanks for you input! I would definitely want one where I could have some say in the book I was getting.

Rachelnyc | 186 comments I received a Book of the Month club subscription this year and am loving it! You have a choice between 5 books each month and so far it's been difficult to choose because there is always more than one book I'm interested in. You can also skip a month if you don't like the selections or use a credit for a previous month selection so lots of options.

Shannon | 0 comments Another Book of the Month Club subscription member here. I have been doing it for around a year and half and still enjoying it. The fact that you have a choice of 5 books is the best feature for me. Also, I don't really need or want bookish trinkets on a regular basis like you get in some book boxes like OwlCrate and such.

Jess Penhallow | 427 comments I got a subscription to Willoughby book club as a present a few years ago. It's a personalised book delivery service that sends books based on your favourite books (my boyfriend is amazing, he went through my Goodreads account and entered every single one of my 5 star books to the application!)

They sent me 3 great books that were different but all in genres I like dystopia, historical fiction and fantasy.

I didn't continue the subscription because it was quite expensive and I already have enough books to get through but it was a really cool idea. It doesn't include all the other non-book stuff but I'm not fussed abut that anyway.

Karen | 161 comments Quick questiin about book of the month club. I did something like this many years ago and the quality of the books ie the binding, end papers was generally poorer quality than if you boigh the books in the store. Has this changed?

I haven't seen any difference in quality with BotM books vs others. my only complaint is that they put the BotM logo on the top right corner of the jacket's front cover as well as on the top of the spine.

I really don't like the logo...

In another life I would have a library room and book boxes delivered every month Lol. I love BOTM, nothing better than coming home to a box of new shiny books. I had to cancel again though because I have no restraint and I order extra every month. I'm running out of room, I literally have books piled against the walls in my room right now. I'd love to try some of the other boxes and get some fun bookish stuff ...

message 15: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 273 comments Haha Tracy - me too. I order extra each month, and I have stacks all along the walls of my guest bedroom because I ran out of shelf space. I even took about 75 books to the used bookstore last week and still have stacks.

One of these days I will have more shelves and a library room....

Sara | 123 comments The Strand Bookstore has some good boxes. I get their feminist literature box, which is quarterly, and it's pretty good. You get 2 books plus a few other items. I also get BOTM, which I've been doing for about 3 years, and I really like the books. I read them and then give them to my mom.

Ashley | 159 comments Like many others, I do Book of the Month. I like it and it's created an even bigger backlog of books I need to read.

I also did OwlCrate for a while. It was just becoming way too many YA books that I wasn't interested in and trinkets that I didn't need/want.

message 19: by Shayrm (new)

Shayrm | 1 comments I was looking at Boxwalla and ordered one of their past book boxes as a standalone yesterday to see what is like before making a commitment. They are an every other month subscription. It looks like they have a theme for each box. I may look at some of the others that have been mentioned above too. :)

Lisa | 111 comments Do any of these book clubs let you choose ebooks? I really don’t have any place to store physical books.
