This book is about the heroine being in a prison (thrown there by elves or some race like them I think). She has a cell next to a creature/man that is surrounded by darkness/shadow and eats any of the guard that gets to close to it/him. The heroine doesn't see what he looks like at first. The man is protective of the heroine and helps/protects her while they are in prison together. Also while they escape the prison the heroine dies (which was part of a prophecy I think) and the hero brings her to someone powerful and that person is the heroines dad and he brings her back to life. Then the hero and heroine escapes to earth and starts their journey there.
