I think it is a novel or novella. Takes place in England. A woman goes to the middle east to help her daughter who is having a baby. The situation is not quite as she thought. On the way home, she has a few hours between busses in a town and walks into the desert. During the walk she realizes that her family has been protecting her by letting her believe whatever she wants to, and her husband is in on the truth. SPOILER..When she gets home she realizes she can say, "I'm so sorry I let you all protect me," or "Could I have a cup of tea." She goes for the tea.
