Val H. | 22289 comments Good luck all! I'm off to the city to see the gorgeous Marlon Williams. With the Bombers and the Pies doing battle (both huge memberships) and White Night in full swing AND buses replacing trains, it's going to be a hectic night. I'll be back later with the results.

Lez | 7490 comments Val, here's the Guardian review of Breaking the Waves.

https://www.theguardian.com/music/201...

Not a complete success it would seem. I hadn't realised it premièred in 2016 and there are excerpts on YouTube.

message 955: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22289 comments Thanks for that Lez - as you say, some good, some bad. I'll have a look on YouTube and keep an eye out should it ever be staged here.

TheFoe | 2646 comments Val wrote: "Nick - can you please pick one of the Tigers or Lions. If it IS a draw, you will get points anyway, but I don't think I can give you points if one of them does win."

Val H. | 22289 comments Tonight's result:

Collingwood Magpies (Tech) v Essendon Bombers (Val)
3.1.19 (Q1) 6.2.38
6.7.43 (Q2) 7.2.44
8.9.57 (Q3) 9.3.57
10.16.76 (Q4) 10.5.65

My Bombers may have gone down but I managed the closest margin (Pies x 13) so $6.00 is going to Beyond The Orphanage.

None of us bar Suzy foresaw the Eagles upset. It has an effect on the Finals as it looks like the Pies will front up against Geelong at the MCG. However, until tomorrow's games are over, the permutations remain endless:

The Magpies will finish in the top four this year thanks to West Coast’s upset loss to Hawthorn. But it also means they’re almost locked in to face Geelong in a qualifying final.

If Brisbane beats Richmond, the Magpies will finish third, with Geelong second.

If Richmond beats Brisbane, they will pass the Pies for fourth and leave Geelong first.

Only a draw would change things - it would result in Collingwood finishing fourth with Brisbane first, so they’d play off at the Gabba.

The Bombers are now guaranteed to be the away team in their elimination final.

If the Western Bulldogs win against Adelaide, they will pass the Bombers for seventh, possibly creating a Pies v Dons week one September rematch. The Dons could also end up facing one of West Coast or Richmond in that final.

If the Western Bulldogs lose, the Bombers will instead head north to face the GWS Giants.

Collingwood is still waiting on... Richmond v Brisbane Lions

Essendon is still waiting on... Western Bulldogs v Adelaide Crows

If the Lions win or draw, they will finish on top. If the Lions lose, the Cats will finish on top.

Unless there is a draw in that game, the Cats will host Collingwood in their qualifying final.

Geelong is still waiting on... Brisbane v Richmond

The Giants are locked into sixth spot and a home elimination final, likely to be played on the Saturday of week one.

They will host either the Western Bulldogs (if they beat Adelaide on Sunday) or Essendon (if the Bulldogs lose or draw).

GWS is still waiting on... Western Bulldogs v Adelaide

The Eagles are now in real danger of dropping out of the top four entirely thanks to their upset loss to Hawthorn.

Collingwood has claimed the double chance thanks to West Coast’s loss, with the final slot in the top four now between Richmond and the 2018 premiers.

If Richmond beats Brisbane on Sunday, they will likely finish third (with second possible via a huge win). That would knock West Coast into fifth and a home elimination final.

If Brisbane beats Richmond by more than a couple of points, the Eagles will cling onto fourth spot and travel to face the Lions in a qualifying final.

The Hawks have kept their finals hopes alive thanks to their stunning road win, but they still need help.

Specifically they need the Western Bulldogs to lose to Adelaide. That should be enough because either the Crows or Port Adelaide would need to win by around 80 points to make up the percentage gap between them and the Hawks, which seems unlikely.

If the Bulldogs win, the Hawks will likely finish ninth.

West Coast is still waiting on... Richmond v Brisbane Lions

Hawthorn is still waiting on... Western Bulldogs v Adelaide Crows

Thanks to Essendon’s loss, the Bulldogs will finish seventh if they win and then travel to face GWS in an elimination final.

Thanks to Hawthorn’s win over West Coast, the Bulldogs will miss the finals with a loss to Adelaide.

The Crows are in big trouble because of Hawthorn’s win over West Coast.

They not only need to beat the Bulldogs but pass the Hawks on percentage - and they’re almost 80 points of margin ahead.

Western Bulldogs’ stakes: Win and play finals, lose and they miss

Adelaide’s stakes: Must win big to have any hopes of playing finals

This result also impacts … GWS Giants, Essendon, Hawthorn and Port Adelaide

Thanks to Collingwood’s win, the Tigers will almost certainly finish fifth if they don’t get the win on Sunday, and then host an elimination final against either Essendon or Hawthorn.

There is a remote possibility Richmond could lose by a point or two and still finish fourth.

The Lions can guarantee themselves the minor premiership — the first for the club in all of its different versions in over a century — if they win on Sunday.

If they lose, Geelong will finish on top of the ladder instead, but as long as they aren’t thumped by 10 goals or more they’ll still finish second ahead of the Tigers.

Richmond’s stakes: Win and could host a qualifying final with top four locked in, lose and risk dropping into fifth

Brisbane’s stakes: Win and finish on top, lose and risk travelling for a qualifying final

This result also impacts … Geelong, West Coast and Collingwood

If the Crows beat the Bulldogs, it’ll be up to Port to win and win really well to finish eighth.

Port Adelaide’s stakes: Must win to have any hopes of play finals, as long as the Bulldogs lost earlier in the day

This result also impacts … Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Adelaide

I hope you got all that because there will be a test!!

message 962: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22289 comments Well it's all done and dusted now. The final position in "the eight" is very important because it not only determines your opponent, but also where you will play (assuming home ground is an advantage). Unfortunately this doesn't apply to Geelong. Their home ground is deemed too small to host a final so they will have to face the Pies at the MCG (the latter's home ground).

Today's results:

Western Bulldogs (Blastro) v Adelaide Crows (Dean)
6.5.41 (Q1) 2.0.12
9.8.62 (Q2) 5.4.34
14.11.95 (Q3) 8.6.54
18.13.121 (Q4) 13.9.87

Richmond Tigers (Philip) v Brisbane Lions (David)
6.2.38 (Q1) 2.1.13
8.6.54 (Q2) 4.4.28
10.7.67 (Q3) 7.6.48
12.10.82 (Q4) 8.7.55

Port Adelaide Power (Grizzly) v Fremantle Dockers (available)
3.4.22 (Q1) 5.1.31
7.9.51 (Q2) 5.6.36
11.17.83 (Q3) 6.6.42

message 964: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22289 comments I hope all the above scores are right (let me know if they're not) because that's it for the home and away season. In First Place we have David who adds $35 to his winnings on behalf of The Song Room. He managed to hold off Tech who earns $25.00 for Oscar's Law. And in Third Place, we have RedJohn who scores $15.00 for the Fr Bob Maguire Foundation. Suzy is our Wooden Spooner (again!) and gets $10.00 for Friends With Dignity.

A further winner is Duke. Jeremy Cameron's 9 goals for the Giants on Saturday saw him take out the Coleman Medal with a total of 67 goals in 2019, holding off North Melbourne’s Ben Brown, who was once again the bridesmaid with 64. So that's another $15.00 for Insight.

Congrats to all the winners and to all of you for joining in so enthusiastically and regularly!

message 965: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22289 comments We now get a week's rest before the Finals but over the next four weeks there's still about £50 to be earned for your charities. You may want to post your tips early rather than risk forgetting to do so in 12 days' time.

Tipsters whose teams are still alive are David, Philip, Sussex, Tech, Blastro, Val and Duke. But remember, all tipsters are still in the competition to pick winners and earn some cash for their charities. There are no prizes for closest margin or highest score, just $15.00 for the tipster who predicts the most wins with the lowest cumulative margins.

Qualifying and Elimination Finals:
(Qualifying: loser gets a second chance)
(Elimination: loser is out of the Finals)

This time I'd like you to choose the winning team AND the margin for ALL FOUR GAMES. Scoring will be one point for every winner picked and a sliding table based on the margins predicted for each game. There will (hopefully) be one winning punter after all games have been played. $15.00 to your charity is up for grabs.

If anyone would like to view the AFL Ladder before submitting next week's tips, it's at
http://www.afl.com.au/ladder

WeeK 1 of the Finals fixtures:

Thursday, Sept 5
First Elimination Final
West Coast Eagles (Sussex) v Essendon Bombers (Val) at Optus Stadium, Perth

Friday, Sept 6

Saturday, Sept 7
Second Elimination Final
Greater Western Sydney Giants (Duke) v Western Bulldogs (Blastro) at the Giants Stadium, Sydney

Saturday, Sept 7
Second Qualifying Final
Brisbane Lions (David) v Richmond Tigers (Philip) at the Gabba, Brisbane

If punters could lodge their tips by midnight WEDNESDAY (your time) SEPTEMBER 4th it would be a great help, although I can accept them up until 10.15am THURSDAY (your time) if absolutely necessary.

Val H. | 22289 comments Happy Birthday Nick and don't be too hard on yourself, you did win a closest margin earlier in the season so you've got AU$6.00 to your name. And you will benefit when I redistribute money won by the three unclaimed teams. Plus, there is still $AU75 out there to be won. You never know, this might be your lucky week.

Good luck everyone. There's still an hour till the bounce (Perth is 2 hours behind Melbourne) so we are all still alive. Go the Bombers!!! (even though I've tipped the Eagles).

First Qualifying Final
Geelong Cats (unwanted) v Collingwood Magpies (Tech)

4.4.28 (Q2) 7.5.47
5.6.36 (Q3) 9.7.61
7.9.51 (Q4) 9.7.61

So the Pies get a week off and the Cats will return to the MCG next weekend to take on the Eagles. I watched about three-quarters of the game and it was all Collingwood. They did sustain a couple of injuries but the week's rest will help with those. I don't know how or why they stopped in the final quarter but I suspect the win was still convincing.

Saturday's results:

Second Elimination Final

3.5.23 (Q1) 2.0.12
6.9.45 (Q2) 5.5.35
12.11.83 (Q3) 7.6.48

6.14.50 (Q3) 14.4.88
8.17.65 (Q4) 18.4.112

Both teams were in it until half time but wilted thereafter. The awesome-looking Tigers get the week off and the Giants will travel to Brisbane to take on the Lions.
