So excited to see this thread up! I can't wait!

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments Me too. And it's the final book. I hope it goes with a bang.
This month is crazy, we got both Moon Rising and Tiamat's Wrath. Space opera galore!

I really need to start reading The Expanse. I own the first book I don't know why I haven't started yet.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments Ooh it is an easy breezy space opera with very likeable cast of characters (different POVs in every book), with quite solid science AND an excellent TV adaptation.

Having buddies might help, the recruitment thread is just one click away *wink

Ariana | 659 comments I have had the first book on my radar for a while... maybe this is a good time to pick it up?

message 7: by Sarah, The Unsettled (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah | 3234 comments Mod
Ariana you should definitely pick it up! Neither of them are too long- if you like them you might be able to get through them before March 19 and join us for number 3.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments Yeah the books are pretty fast paced.

By the wayyyy, I just found out from Jonathan Strahan from his podcast that he's currently editing a novella that's also the prequel from the Luna trilogy, due to be published this year. Temporary title: Menace from the Farside. It tells the story of an exploration team who were looking for Neil Armstrong's footprint, something like that...I think we're gonna be treated with more moonscaping :)

I just geeked out when I realized this was only 5 days away. Sorry I'm such a nerd. I'm beyond ready for something I know I'm going to enjoy.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments Hey, nerds never say sorry for being nerds :D

This nerd is super stoked as well. I think this is the first next-in-series book that I wait in 2019. I have been trying to reduce my series and read more standalones but there is a certain thrill in following a series and looking forward to a next book...

Ariana | 659 comments Just started Luna: New Moon! We'll see how fast I can get through it, maybe I'll only be a little late.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments That's great, Ariana!

Now, from what I remembered from New Moon, the novel takes a while to introduce us to the characters, so do stick around longer since it will worth it.

Awesome! Feel free to discuss book one and two here. I didn’t read them *that* long ago. I should remember enough to comment. I know there were a couple parts in book one that had me scratching my head.

I just looked at the blurb- apparently this has already been optioned for CBS?! I have to admit- part of me is thrilled and the other part of me is dreading it.

(No specific spoilers just general book setting/theme comments)
I always imagined the setting as like (view spoiler). I’m not sure CBS has the budget to do it justice. (view spoiler)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments I am now rereading Wolf Moon

Hmm CBS....Well, if they make it at least as good as Star Trek Discovery....maybe a miniseries would be nice per one book.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments I am 35% into Wolf Moon and could not help but thinking that the Corporation rivalry is rather similar to the power struggle in A Song of Ice and Fire and I could not help but drawing parallels between the Westerosi noble houses and the Lunar family corps.

The Cortas= House Martell
The MacKenzies= House Lannister (they even have similar motto) /
The Vorontzovz= House Arryn (not sure but close enough)
The Asamoahs= House Tully/Stark (seem pretty honorable)
The Suns = House Tyrell (having a matriarch and super rich)

message 18: by Sarah, The Unsettled (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah | 3234 comments Mod
I haven’t read or watched enough Game of Thrones to draw the parallels- Cortas/Martells- is that like New kids on the block sort of deal?

Mackenzie’s and Lannisters - like the oldest/meanest kids on the block? The ones to beat?

I can definitely see the Asamoahs and Stark/Tully (too honorable to play the game well).

Arryn- is that the house Cat Starks sister married into? I know next to nothing about them except Cat Stark’s sister is crazy (which it now occurs to me why there might be a parallel lol).

And the Tyrell’s I really don’t know. Like I know them but not really what they were about. I viewed the Suns as super vicious though (something they did in book one) and I never really thought of House Tyrell that way. Except for the Grandma. She bad. In a good way.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments Let's see...
The Martells are as flashy and passionate as the Cortas. They are also very resilient, despite having their center of power sacked and occupied and always found their way back for revenge. Oh and their dynasty was also founded by a woman.

The Lannisters are ambitious, powerful family and they, like the MacKenzies, tend to have big, extended families and the infighting as well.

I will withdraw the Arryn parallels now that I gave it more thoughts. Maybe they are more Baratheon than Arryn. The Baratheons have a strong navy, the Vorontsovs had their space fleet. Baratheons is basically an offshoot of House Targaryen in the way that VTO Earth gave birth to VTO Luna.

The Tyrells were as ambitious and opportunistic as the Suns. Different with the MacKenzies, they were a united bunch.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments And yes, House Arryn was the family Lysa Tully married into. They are an old, proud house and actually is in the brink of extinction (heir crisis and all).

Ahh- that makes more sense now. Not coincidentally Game of Thrones is my “get on the bandwagon” challenge read for the year. Technically book 2 is. I have read book one. I’ve seen about four seasons of the show. But so much happens in one episode I’ve definitely missed stuff, and it’s been a couple years at this point.

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments Do we have a discussion about the two earlier books somewhere? I couldn't find anything, but if it exists, point me to it! I'm thinking of starting the series today or tomorrow. I've been intrigued since New Moon came out, so now is the perfect time. I don't know anything about this world, since I haven't read the blurb after first hearing about the book. Let's hope I'm in the mood for whatever this is :D

Nah, I don't think there's one. Oh Anna you should definitely start, the series is really unique. Not just like ASOIAF, but also...maybe The Godfather? Yeah I definitely got the mafia feel. (view spoiler)I should stop gushing and Ian McDonald should pay me LOL

Darn it, my hope is so high for the third book. Please, please don't suck.

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments Oh no, I hate mafia stories! Maybe I should read the blurb before starting after all :D

edit: The blurb sounds like something I'd enjoy right now, so I'm back on board!

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments Oh my goodness! :o I started the audiobook and first five minutes is just a list of weird names! Thank you Amazon for the Look Inside function, I was able to see what all these names look like written. The pronunciation is really strange, "Sun" sounds like "Swan" for example. This might be better read with eyes. I'm going to try anyway, I want to know what moonrunners are, as well as all the stranger terms I don't remember yet.

Ariana | 659 comments I am enjoying New Moon so far! It does make me think of Jade City, though, with all the familial drama. Except x3 or 4, because there's so may more characters, and more families that we get to know. (view spoiler)(very mild spoiler for early on in New Moon, maybe Ch. 3). And yes, I feel like it was a terrible choice on the part of the audio producer to include the character list.

And here I had no real interest in Jade City until you compared the two. I am wondering if it would be a disappointment since I love this series so much and it feels so epic with its large cast and the “corporate” competition.

I felt like Jade City is a better comparison to The Godfather, because it does focus more on a few characters, but the dynamics within the family are similar. You might enjoy it if you scale back your expectations first :) It is hard to complete with the scale of the Luna world building. It's really vivid and immersive.

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments I hated Jade City, so far (somewhere in chapter 2) I'm loving this. I wish I had the book to look at though, I'm not confused by the names so far, but some of the terms aren't sticking yet. I can't make out what the narrator is saying, so it doesn't help that I read the character list.

I'm hating most of the characters, but loving the book. So far I think only Marina and Luna aren't horrible people!

message 31: by Anna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments I'm usually not bothered by finding these things out as I read, but since I'm listening to the audio, it's making things a little harder. So would someone kindly tell me what these mean? I'm assuming they all refer to hierarchy or family ties somehow?

choego - head of family?
oko - spouse?
keji-oko - second spouse?
hwaejang
zashitnik
omahene

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments Thank you so much Sarah! That's going to help a lot! Like I said, I normally don't have trouble with these things when I'm eye-reading, but for some reason listening to this one feels like I need to see these terms with my eyes, hearing isn't enough.

No worries! It was confusing enough to eye-read. I don't know if I would have made it through the audio. How is the narrator? Maybe I could give it a listen if I can track it down.

message 35: by Anna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments It has three narrators, I've only heard two so far. The male narrator is good, I like how he pronounces things, although I can't judge how correct his pronunciation is. The first female narrator, who's reading Adriana's life story, is a bit too gravely for my listening taste, but otherwise fine.

And yeah, I'm not saying I can understand everything when I'm eye-reading, just that the words stick in my head better, and I can pause a bit to figure out the meaning. With the audio everything just speeds by, and I forget what the word even was.

message 36: by Anna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments I would definitely switch to eye-reading otherwise, but I have free access to the audiobooks, and my library only has the book in Russian.

Ohh-- this sounds intriguing. I think I will have to give it a try. I love audio when there is more than one narrator.

BTW I think Jade City is so much simpler and rather tamer than the Luna series.

That’s helpful. I’ll probably hold off. I wouldn’t be in the mood to tolerate hoping for one thing and getting something “tamer”. Lol. Tamer is not my style. Last year it probably would have been fine but this year I’m finding myself annoyed by the simplest things.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments Oh nooo my preordered Kindle copy will arrive on March 21st. That is so weird since the other edition is already out.

message 46: by Sarah, The Unsettled (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah | 3234 comments Mod
That’s weird. Does it have something to do with the edition (is it a UK)? I was thinking I would just pick up a hard copy. I like these books enough to own them. I’d have to hunt down the other two at some point though.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments Yeah, it's UK edition. I chose it because it's much cheaper than the US one, around $9. But no worries, you can start on time. I usually read quickly especially for long awaited books like this.

$9! Shoot. The US edition is super expensive.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2828 comments Sarah wrote: "$9! Shoot. The US edition is super expensive."

9.6 was for preorder price but now I think the UK edition price is not much different with the US one.

message 50: by Anna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments This really isn't well suited to audio. Is it only the wolves who use neutral pronouns, and only during the dark phase? It's really hard to tell from the audio! I finished the book, but I still don't know. And is there anything in the book that explains why Sun is pronounced like Swan or Soo-uhn? Where does the extra 'ah' sound come from?

I'm hoping the next one will be easier, since I already know what I'll be getting into. Unless of course everything is new. The next two books seem to have a new narrator, even though the cover image has the same narrator name. Confusing!
