Shae Hamrick | 283 comments We are thinking about doing a third volume of our Halloween tales titled 31 Days of October Stories IV, Revenge Halloween Style.

We will be primarily looking for three categories: blood and guts, scary, and terrifying. This will be an adult book.

We have had many great ones in the previous books, and they are still getting picked up on Amazon Unlimited. The income is not enough to offset the cost as yet, but the advertising has been very limited and yet they are still being read. This encourages me to believe we might get more exposure this year. This time, we are going to focus more on the “Horror”.

"… what most Kindle readers want these days is horror short stories. That means you don't have to spend months getting a long novel written! Because many readers of this genre actually want to buy short stories." Temper Thomas

If we get a tighter style of stories this year, we could hit the market for horror stories harder. Given that, I am hoping for many submissions but will be accepting only the best.

And there will only be one volume this year. If there are enough good stories, I may create a new series of Books under a different title and it will publish at the same time.

The theme will be Revenge Halloween Style, so either Halloween or October must be in the story as a setting piece.

Three prompts are provided. You must use at least one.
~ Revenge
~ Transformation
~ Nightmare
And the story must have a horror/scare/terror plot and a twist.

The ending can be either happy, sad, or tragic. (Tragic is defined as the MC caused the problem and couldn’t overcome it.)

The word count must be 2000 words or less. Preferably between 1000 – 1500 words. Shorter would be great, longer may need a little editing. (Please pre-edit or have someone give you an edit before submitting. If I find I have to do major edits, I will send it back and request you to work with an editor.)

Stories will need to be submitted before June 1st...
(email them to daysofoctober31@gmail.com).

And next year we will use “The Dead Will Rise” theme with someone dead, someone alive, and a graveyard or archeologist dig. If You want to start writing for next year, You can.

So what do you think? Anyone interested?

*****
Genre: Fantasy, Thriller, Sci-Fi, Paranormal, Mystery, Crime, Romance, or a mixture (BASICALLY, anything but erotica)

Blood and gore are fine ... IF ... it's a Spine-Chilling Short Story. I'm talking suspense horror. Stalkers-monsters-vampires-serial killers-twisted mountain people-cannibal type of stories. It can end sweet but only after scaring the pants off the reader. It's about the scare, the terror, the twisted endings. The story should open with a puzzle, lead to a fear or scare, and end as a tragedy or comedy (laughing or crying).

Rules and Directions -

* Type in English - between 100 to 2,000 words; no erotica and no profanity.

* Post your title, by line, and word count total in the first line of your story/poem/article.

* Upon acceptance of a short story, authors will provide an Afterword and/or bio for their story title with a word count of about 75 words (to fit on one page in the book). You may include a list of previous author publications and/or a website.

* Each Author will be able to purchase paperbacks “at cost” in addition to shipping cost provided you give me 3-4 weeks to get them to you; Authors are not required to purchase anything. The Author can mark up a book price on their own purchased copies; the Author can sell their own books; the Author can make a profit this way.

* For regular retail book sales, the Licensee maintains publication profit to use for anthology cost production, promotion, and if sales are enough, for marketing materials.

* Writers are responsible for their own copyright. Authors keep all rights. PRIVACY POLICY IS ENFORCED. COPYRIGHTS AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS BELONG TO INDIVIDUAL AUTHORS. THIS CONTEST DOES NOT GRANT ANY PERSON THE RIGHT OR LICENSE TO COPY OR USE OTHER STORIES. EACH STORY IS PROTECTED BY THE COPYRIGHT OF THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR.

Timeline: STORY SUBMISSIONS CLOSED AFTER May 31st
*Edits by author group/leaders by Aug 1st
*Returns for author acceptance to approve changes between Aug 15th
*Author contracts and acceptance of story edits returned by Aug 15th with Afterword/Bio if not already returned.
*Cover design by August 30th and out to authors for pre orders.
*Formatting and up loading complete by September 15th.
*Pre-launch and marketing from September 15th to October 1st.
*Launch, and full on marketing from October 1st to November 5th.

Purpose - The main purpose of this project is some fiction writers are looking to participate in an anthology in addition to sharpen plot and character skills, collect their own short stories, receive good feedback, make a good connection with other writers, and take a short break from their current novel to get a fresh view when they return to it.

Halloween Story Starters (remember, this year is about revenge)
• As I looked at the Jack-O-Lantern, it seemed to look back at me, and then...
• Your child won’t stop crying and screaming in the middle of the night. You visit her grave to ask her why.
• There was a low growl from behind the bushes - its eyes glowed red.
• I thought there were no such things as supernatural beings until I met…
• The zombie was walking through my front lawn...
• As I reached into the bag of candy, I thought I heard a voice saying, “Pick me, pick me! (finish the story)
• I was putting my Halloween costume on when I heard something moving in the closet…
• It's been watching me for hours now... Sometimes I catch glimpses of its reflection on the computer screen, but I dare not turn around...
• Write a spooky story to tell around the campfire. Remember, you want to build suspense using onomatopoeia and alliteration. Don’t forget to have a big finale to frighten everyone who is listening.

What Ifs?
• What if you became the monster or character you were dressed as on Halloween night?
• What if there really were monsters under the bed? And one impersonated your child?
• What would you do if you saw a ghost who wanted you to follow him/her?
• What would you do if you heard a scream from an old abandoned house?
• What would happen if you took a walk through the cemetery at night and witnessed the dead rising?
• You just found out that your best friend is a mad scientist. What crazy experiment is she or he working on?

If you would like some writing prompt IMAGES, please go to Glenda’s Pinterest page where she has saved some images specifically for 31 Days of October (and others). www.pinterest.com/glendagreynolds/amw ...

Submissions and inquires may be sent to daysofoctober31@gmail.com and a google group will be formed with a full forum.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND – that our goal is to create an October/Halloween anthology. We do not have a book cover as of yet. We are still talking about all of this. Suggestions are welcome.

AND YES... I stole most of this from the previous anthology discussion. Thanks Glenda.

Stephanie (furyanhound) I don't have much experience with blood & gore, but I'm always up for a challenge! Let me see what I can put together, Shae! Ha ha, don't think I'll be buying many copies of this book, though - I'm a major scaredy-cat! ;)

Shae Hamrick | 283 comments Stephanie, ... LOL. No problem. Blood and Gore are not necessary. Just a good scare. And I understand as I can only handle so much "scare" myself. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

My inspiration for writing my story came while I was still in bed somewhere in between sleep and waking yesterday. I wrote a complete story; it's about 1550 words. Did you want stories sent to your new email address?

I am going to scare myself and take up the challenge Shae.

Thank you, Denise. I used to compete in my church's music and art divisions; I won some trophies. My art work still hangs in the church that my grandmother preached at. A picture can say so much more than words sometimes.

Got it, and Todd's.

I also got inspired the other day as I was going to bed and emailed me a rough draft of my own story from my kindle. Amazing what your mind can come up with as you drift off to sleep.

message 27: by Shae (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shae Hamrick | 283 comments Hi everyone. Well, the google forum doesn't work so hot.... well. it didn't work hardly at all. not sure what it was supposed to do but it didn't. So... there is just the email ( daysofoctober31@gmail.com ).

I have 6 stories from five authors (including me).

So far, I have Todd's, Stephanie's, Rejoice's, and Glenda's two. If you submitted and are not on the list, I didn't get it. Please send it again.

If you are on the list, please consider submitting a second story.

If you haven't submitted and you considered it, please email me with your idea and I will discuss it with you.

We need 5 more stories minimum and I have room for up to 10 authors total. Beyond 10 authors and I can't list everyone. It takes an Act of God or a decree of congress to get more on Amazon. I've tried.

If I need to, I can fill the void. I was just hoping that others were interested in getting published. Especially if you already have books out. If you would like another genre, let me know. I would be glad to check it out.

These anthologies are getting attention all year round. I put them in Kindle unlimited and they are getting read. The better the story, and the more like your other works, the more likely that readers will come find you for more.

Thanks everyone. And, for those who I have a story from, you should be hearing from me shortly. Thank you for your patience. It was a busy month in May.

Glenda Reynolds (glendareynolds) | 1098 comments Mod

Shae Hamrick | 283 comments Hi. Sorry about the delay in getting your stories back to you. I hadn’t expected to go back to work so soon and didn’t realize the toll my treatment is having on me.

I have sent out emails. You should have one if you sent me a story.

Thanks for submitting and Thanks for the great stories.

God Bless,

Shae Hamrick.

Thanks everyone who participated.

Shae, just a note. The last email you sent with the inserted pictures, the pictures are not showing up. I've looked at the email on my phone and this Kindle Fire tablet. I was all set to buy 3 copies, but I don't think you provided a link to place the order at cost plus shipping. I would be paying with PayPal through glendareynolds2004@yahoo.com

I did a book trailer for this anthology. https://youtu.be/BlpjXqptWFw
Hope you like it. Please comment. Thank you.

message 39: by Shae (new) - rated it 4 stars

Shae Hamrick | 283 comments okay folks.

I called KDP because it updated the price there and they didn't update amazon. the answer is that it takes 3-5 business days to update amazon, after KDP accepts the change. SO.... I'm leaving the price at 4.06 for the foreseeable future so that you can use it as a promotion or to buy copies. The catch is, you have to watch for amazon to finally update first.

Sorry. Next year, if we do this again, i start with the lowest price for the first 6 months and then raise it. that way there is no issue. and I publish it two months earlier to have time to fiddle with covers and insides while i wait for them to accept and publish updates. Maybe it will actually be out on time then and right. Dang they have made this so hard.

Shae
