20.5 - Bigger is Better - Librarianish's Task: TBR-Buster!

I don't know about you, but my "to-be-read" shelf seems to get longer with each season, no matter how many books I read. Though I do try to fit each challenge's tasks into my TBR list, it doesn't always work out, and then I hear about more great books I missed when they first came out, and the list just gets longer!

Choose one of the following options and, following the directions for that option, read ONE book from your to-read/to-be-read (TBR) shelf. If you don't maintain a TBR shelf, use my shelf (below) or select one of the moderators' shelves and select an option below. You may use one of your custom TBR shelves, such as "books I own".
Librarianish's TBR
Sandy's TBR
Kristina Simon's TBR
Dlmrose's TBR

Required: Indicate the option, whose shelf you used and the date it was added to the TBR shelf.

Option 1: Randomizer. If your TBR shelf isn't currently set as "sortable", go to edit bookshelves and click on the "sortable" checkbox for your shelf. Note the total number of books on that shelf. Sort by "#" - first column.
Using the True Random Number Generator at https://www.random.org/, enter the number of books in your shelf as the maximum, and hit "generate." Repeat twice, recording all three numbers generated. Select one of the numbers and read the corresponding book on your list. If the random book is not yet published or does not meet the SRC general rules, skip to the next available book in order on the shelf.
Required: Report the three numbers generated by the randomizer, and the number of the book you selected.

Option 2: A-Z. Sort your TBR list by author's name. Read a book written by a single author whose first or last name begins with any letter in TO BE READ.

Option 3: First In, First Out. Go to your TBR shelf and sort by date added, oldest first. Read one of the books in the first 20 on the shelf.

This help thread is open.
The True Random Number Generator is on the upper right.

Susan A | 1661 comments 1. There is no requirement that the book be on my TBR at this time, correct? I can add a book that is due to be released in April and use Option 2?

2. For option 1 - -when I read a book and mark it read, it will be removed from my TBR and then the numbers associated with the remaining books on my TBR will change. So if I use the randomizer today and select book #147...when I read it in 4 or 5 weeks, it's probably not going to be #147 on my TBR anymore -- at least, I think this is how it works. How do I handle that?

Marie-Anne | 950 comments For #1, I have nearly 3000 titles on my TBR (I know, soo many books, so little time :) ), and the numbers generated are large, and scrolling is taking too much time. Is there a way to go directly to a given position number? I could not find a way.
Thanks!

It's cumbersome, but doable. Change your display to 100 per page, rather than infinite scroll. Then go to page 2, and copy the url that appears in your address bar. Note where the "page=2" appears, and replace that with the number you need (to get to #1000, for example, replace that with "page=10"). See my url below for an example of where the "page= " appears.

1. Per the SRC general rules,

For tasks that require reading a book from a Goodreads listopia list or shelf, the book must appear on the list or shelf when you access it and the player may not add books to the list to be used for that task.

2. The task just requires that you capture the # and report it in your post, so that's ok.

Rach (rachlovestv) | 261 comments I have a sort of strange question - I was planning on using A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith for option 2 for this task. I've had in on my to-read list since 2009, so I was good in that regard. Yesterday, I went in and switched to the edition I actually got from the library, and I noticed today that now under timeline it says:

May 23, 2019 – Shelved as: to-read
May 26, 2009 – Shelved

Is it still ok to use this for this task? Is it clear enough that's it has been on my TBR for a while?

Thanks!

steph (librarianish) (steph_davidson) | 540 comments The Task description doesn’t require that the specific edition have been on your TBR, so you’re good there.

Great, thanks! I had never notice it do that before, so I was confused. :)
