It had been a few years so I had to re-read this to remember just the first volume. It's not my favorite of the Star Wars series but I enjoyed the dark humor. I liked Aphra better than Vader and the droids were amusing. 000 has an HK-47 vibe that's pretty great in this volume.

I read this a few months ago and was seriously impressed by how much I enjoyed this entire series (I was originally very hesitant on this and the Star Wars series). The first volume establishes some very fun story points and I think Gillen & Larroca as a team are incredible on this volume.

I won't get into details for spoiler reasons but I was disappointed that later volumes had Vader basically waltzing through his problems. It didn't make the series unenjoyable for me but it was disappointing.
I was 10 years old when Star Wars and 13 for The Empire Strikes Back. I loved Empire, but was highly disappointed in Return of the Jedi and never warmed to any of the other films. I probably would have enjoyed this book as a young teenager, if I'd read it soon after I'd seen Empire. But 35 years later, I'm just not interested. This was my first attempt ever at a Star Wars comic, and I don't have any desire to dig up any more at this point.
This was more interesting and Vader was more complex than I was expecting. I really had low expectations because some of the other newly minted Marvel Star Wars books had disappointed. Gillen and Larroca changed my mind though. I also had a moment where Vader's speed and agility surprised me and I had to stop to re-read. I guess that's the difference between the 1977 film version of a man who is trying to manage that costume and an illustrated Vader with no limitations. (I liked it, Vader should seem that powerful and dangerous IMO)
This book fits in the approved Disney canon, but it didn’t move me as I am really only a fan of the Star Wars movies and I wasn’t invested in the narrative. Because all the action is between two movies you know Vader will live while new characters will die, thus when Palpatine threatened Vader with replacing him with new apprentices, I was not worried in the least. So while I understand on one level that this is a well written and illustrated graphic novel, I will not continue with the series due to my personal preference for the movies. My full review of the graphic novel can be found on my blog: https://graphicnovelty2.com/2019/03/2...
I liked it a lot. Aphra was interesting, but 000 and BT were my favorites. I found it interesting Vader's description of the Emperor's plan was "blasphemous", speaking of the Force in religious terms.
I'd love to see this as an animated movie or TV series.
I wasn't a fan of Aphra, but I seem to be in the minority. Are we supposed to root for her? Is she a scoundrel like Han or she evil because she seems to enjoy working with Vader?

Sometimes she helps, sometimes she's selfish, but she always makes a mess.
You know, I wasn't really too impressed by the first volume. But last night, I finished up volume 3 in this series and fervently wished I had volume 4 on hand to commence reading right away, so Gillen and company must be doing something right. Right?
