To Kill a Mockingbird was voted the Best Loved Novel in the PBS program The Great American Read. It is especially relevant in the USA during this era of rising racial tensions.

Chapter 1: Scout and her family live in Maycomb, Alabama in the heart of the Deep South. At least one of their ancestors had slaves. They got their wealth from cotton. This immediately gives background to the story. Maycomb is based on Monroeville, AL where Harper Lee and Truman Capote both grew up.
