Stephen Alff (AlffBooks) (alffbooks) | 440 comments I have a habit(and a rule) to always finish any book I start :)

message 2: by Anna (new)

Anna (abookobsessed) Usually I force myself to finish it, hoping that it does get better. I have only once stopped reading a book and never finished it :)

message 3: by Quinn (new)

Quinn (missquinny) | 31 comments I normally force myself to finish it but I have had a couple of occasions where I just could't finish the book.

One of them may make me very unpopular but I just couldn't finish FanGirl I Just got more and more angry with the main character in the book, I hated her she just infuriated me to no end.

message 4: by Amber (new)

Amber I usually finish it, but it just depends on the book and how far I've gotten. If it's a book I own, or by an author I've enjoyed in the past, I almost always force myself to finish it. Sometimes I don't finish a review copy if I've gotten halfway through and it hasn't grabbed my attention yet.

message 5: by Kaojoua (new)

Kaojoua (juniebooks) I usually finish my books, but lately I haven't. This is usually because the main character is too annoying to tolerate. I've also stopped reading when the plot is progressing too slowly with nothing interesting happening. I hardly ever force myself to finish unless the book is by an author whose work I enjoyed in the past. And if the book is by an author that's new to me, I just skim or jump to the last few pages.

message 6: by Vika (new)

Vika (torihchan) | 1 comments If I really don't like the book but I like the authors style of writing I finish it but I usually don't care for the characters just the writing but if i dont like the style nor the plot then i just give up on the book for a while a try late however its rare for me to not like the book i buy because i usually read a chapter at the bookstore and if im buying online i go on my kindle and download a sample so i know that i will like it :)

message 7: by Lex (new)

Lex Mori (lex_mori) | 1 comments I usually read to the first 50-100 pages. If a book doesn't get better after that long, it's not worth seeing if it will. The Host is a great example. After 88 pages of setup and still nothing decent, I lost all interest.

message 8: by Britta (new)

Britta (macdeath) | 44 comments Hm... Either I'm just not too picky a reader or I'm good at picking books to read... Because I haven't really felt annoyed enough or bored enough or whatever enough to not finish a book. I pretty much always finish whatever I'm reading.
Though of course because I usually read many books at once, it might happen that a book is on hiatus for quite a while, but I always get to it at some point.

message 9: by Jacquie (new)

Jacquie Marques (jacquie_fortin) | 6 comments I usually try to at least push through the first half in case it just starts out slow or annoying and then gets better. If I'm still not into it at that point, I consider putting it down. I have trouble totally abandoning a book though. Even if I put it down for a while, I usually try to finish it eventually.

message 10: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Lower (jesslower) | 3 comments I try to at least read between 50-100 pages, and if I'm still not into it I'll put it down for awhile and come back to it. I abandon books very rarely but if I do it means I gave them at least a few tries, and even then if I left it as currently reading on Goodreads I will probably go back and push through it.

message 11: by Isadora (new)

Isadora Kallina (isadorakdp) I always finish it! I have to give it a chance! Only if I finish it I'll really know if I like it or not. Even tho sometimes the book is boring I can't put it down. I feel bad about it!

message 12: by Emma (new)

Emma Reid I've always finished all the books I've started, but then again I'm not a horribly picky reader. What helps is reading more than one book at once. Then, if one book is boring or has a frustrating character, I can read something else until I'm ready to continue. I'm also petrified that the book will get amazing at the end, and I'll be missing out.

message 13: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 13 comments I always finish my books as a rule.

Finishing a book on its own merit is satisfying enough for me even if the story is particularly not my taste.

I do have a bad habit where I start books sometimes and don't return to them because I wasn't in the mood to read that particular genre or story. However, I will always return to read it and finish it at some point. If I don't return to it in two weeks or longer, I start the book over to make sure I refresh on the details. :)

message 14: by Clara (new)

Clara (mrspartypoison) I usually read until I can't handle it anymore. Then, months later I finish the book(most of the times) because I don't like unfinished books D:

message 15: by Manaji (new)

Manaji | 51 comments Before I used to do my best to finish it but since City of Bones I don't. I forced myself to read it and hate it like I never hate a book before so now I don't push myself anymore. Honestly life is too short to read books you don't enjoy :)

message 16: by Erica (new)

Erica (Reading Kitten) I usually read about 25% and then I give up if I'm still bored. But sometimes I power through... it depends on my mood and on the book I guess. If it's really hyped up I will give it a chance, to see if it gets better (cause it must be hyped up for a reason, right?) but if it doesn't I don't mind DNF'ing.

message 17: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberinbookland) Stephen wrote: "I have a habit(and a rule) to always finish any book I start :)"

Me too! Although I usually regret wasting my time on something I clearly wasn't enjoying :/

message 18: by Lily (new)

Lily Bannister (lilybannister) | 41 comments I normally finish books but if I'm not interested in them to start with and they're not any better I won't waste my time. You can see 2 of those books on my didn't finish bookshelf.

message 19: by Olivera (new)

Olivera (olivera-mitic) I usually give it a bit more time. Maybe continue until the half and if I really just can't find anything after that point that makes me wanna read it, I have no problem putting it down.

message 20: by Paige (new)

Paige | 13 comments I usually stop reading if i'm not enjoying it. With Uni, I don't have a whole lot of time to read, so I don't want to spend it reading something I don't like.

message 21: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Blankenship (lovelaurenemily) I never force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying or can't get into. When you read for fun I feel like that's silly. When I force myself to finish it I usually end up giving it a crap rating even if it's really a good book because I had that negative experience of not getting into it. I would much rather try again when I'm in the mood, and I think that is perfectly okay.

message 22: by GabsAboutBooks (new)

GabsAboutBooks If it's a book I bought, I try to get half way through the it before quitting. If the first half of the book didn't draw me in then I doubt the remainder of the book will. Now if it's a book I've borrowed or gotten for free than I don't feel as guilty not finishing it. I'll typically try to get a fourth of the way through then put it down if I'm still not interested.

message 23: by Malea (new)

Malea Mandoki | 3 comments I try to keep reading.
Usually when I pick up a book I get a small headache in the first few pages, as if my mind is actually trying to create a vision of the world for me. I power through and continue on and eventually, I fall into the story and can read it just fine.

Give it time. If you just can't read it though, put it aside and keep it on your to-read list. One day, you may actually want to pick it up again.

message 24: by Tascha (new)

Tascha (misskattiec) | 22 comments I used to have the habbit to always finish a book, even if I disliked it. A year ago or something it occured to me how much time I'm losing by reading something I don't like instead of reading something I would probably enjoy, so after that I started to set the books aside. I have the rule to read at least 1/3 into the book to see if it fits for me or if it doesn't.

message 25: by Lily (new)

Lily Bannister (lilybannister) | 41 comments If it's a book I buy I definitely try and finish because otherwise it's a waste of money and I will only put it down if it's extremely bad. If it's a library book I sort of don't care and I will try but sometimes it's not worth it and I want to read other books.

message 26: by Hanna (new)

Hanna Bella (dazzlingbooksid) | 4 comments I would usually set it aside for a while then, when im bored or when i have spare time when i can really spend the time concentrating and reading, i pick it up and finish it.
