J Washburn (iamjwashburn) | 5 comments I have noted the entry about initials in the librarian guidelines. However, I believe that rule doesn't apply to this case.

If my name were "James," my initial would be "J." In that case, the period would suggest to the reader that "J." is short for something longer. For example, J.K. Rowling's "J." is short for Joanne.

But my whole first name is just one letter. It's extremely unusual, I know, which is why it causes confusion. And it's not a pen name that I made up either. Legally, my name is just one character long and doesn't require a period. When you add an unnecessary period, that actually makes it longer, rather than abbreviating it. Also, it makes people think I have a longer name that I have shortened into a single initial. It makes fans ask "What does the J stand for?" In short, it's misleading. (See http://jwashburn.com/author.) Goodreads is helping to reinforce the misconception that my name has been shortened from something longer.

It is very important to me and my readers that I display the correct name. Can you help me to change it back?

Thank you so much for you help on this. I appreciate it a lot.
