Humans have developed a way to be immortal, but the shot must be given before a certain age in order for it to be effective. They live among the stars with Earth as a haven for artists.

Because the delicacy of life helps to inspire art, and mankind didn't want to give up creating it, children who show the possibility of talents get sent to Earth to learn and hone their craft. When the time comes, the children decide if they want to stay on Earth to create art or to leave and become immortal. Defore is a musician, he grows up with and falls for a red headed girl who draws. He stays on earth, she decides to not age, but they have sex before she leaves and she becomes pregnant.

People must get permission to have children and they do not even meet their children until they are around 10. Because of this disconnect they children do not know their last names until they meet their parents, therefore, the protagonist's last name is Defore (D-4).
