Brody D1 Summary:

Will, Halt, and Horace want to stop the group of outsiders, but the outsiders are taking over the kingdom. So they challenge the outsiders leader also known as Tennyson to hand to hand combat to show everyone that Tennyson is a fraud. Then Tennyson hires assassins to kill the king before he battles so he can escape and run. 59

Analyzing Characterization:

In the book Ranger's Apprentice Kings of Clonmel I would like to look at one character in particular and his name is Halt. If you were to meet this character for the first time you might think he’s definitely a static character. In the book there is plenty of times where you can see Halt being a very grim person. Throughout chapter 4 you can see how he acts cold and fierce and he doesn’t show any emotion. Although you might see this, I think Halt is actually a dynamic character because he shows emotion to his new lovely wife and to his friends, Will and Horace. On page 97 Will jumps out of his seat and greats Halt and Halt replies, “Questions, questions, questions.” If you’ve been reading the books you can see here that it’s humor from Halt and Halt is actually showing that he is excited to see Will again. Also on Page 97 we can see him embracing Lady Pauline, his wife, with one of his famous hugs. Here is Halt showing love and compassion for somebody. Now as we head later on into the book we can see some hatred develop in Halt when he confronts his brother. We see this happening on page 238 when Halt says, “Hello, brother.” Now this might not sound like much, but its the word the author uses next, “quietly”. Now Halt wears a hood over his head and a bow slung across his shoulders and throwing knifes among his belt, so when the author says “quietly” he's saying that Halt is not in the mood to be joking around with anyone. This is Halts rugged, mean, and grim emotion. Now to finish off Halts wild emotion train I say we end off with something happy like on page 355 where Halt says, “You do and I’ll give you a clip over the ear.” This is once again where we see Halt’s famous use of jokes and wit. Even though Halt may seem like a dark person he still has a sense of humor, love, and happy side. From all of these different type of emotions Halt is definitely a dynamic character. 367

Opinion:
Kings of Clonmel a good book? Yes, I would read this book plenty of times. This is one of the few books in Ranger's Apprentice that I may read it again. There is just such a good plot structure in this book you can clearly see the rising actions, climax, and then the resolutions. I really like books that are clearly stated like that. I also love when the author puts Horace, Will, and Halt on the same mission. It adds a good amount of humor, seriousness, and a pretty good hype for Horace’s little sword fights that he has. This book was a very good addition to the series of Ranger’s Apprentice. I also love how this book flows with the series and how it follows up right after book 7 cause it keeps the flow moving. I think the only thing I would’ve liked to be added in the story is a bit more description of Tennyson, because I picture him like a white marshmallow walking around. I could’ve missed the author mentioning his appearance on another page, but that’s how I pictured him. Just a little bit more description on Tennyson, but other than that I believe that this book is one of the best in the series. 211
