I recently read Lois McMaster Bujold's Shards of Honor and (this happens to me often) it triggered a memory of another book with some common elements in the opening portion. I believe this book is a fairly recent publication - probably within the last five years.
The book starts with two groups, one human and one humanoid, temporarily stranded on a planet - possibly the result of spacecrafts damaged in combat. I think that the groups represent competing corporate/military powers. The groups work together to reach safety until rescue can arrive.
I think there is a trek across desert-like conditions to a mountain base shelter (artificial cave?) with planetary hazards along the way. There is conflict between the two groups and within the first group (humans).
The book is No Words Alone by Autumn Dawn. I can't believe I've been puzzling over this off and on for days and when I finally post a request, I stumble over the book (digitally speaking) almost immediately.
