There's been some discussion recently about back cover blurbs, but for me when buying it's more down to the sample I always download. If the writing or the content is not up to scratch then that's the end of it, no sale. My main concern as a writer therefore is to make the opening sequences as good as they can be - not always easy...

I keep telling myself to write an outlandish opening line of dialogue, but typically prefer to describe a scene first. I feel this makes it harder to have something memorable.

I try to have an opening action sequence and avoid exposition. The goal is to make the reader want to know what is going on. Why are these people fighting / canoodling ? If they want to know, then they need to keep reading.
