Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments Since at least a couple of us have finished Les Misérables, who would like to read The Count of Monte Cristo?

message 2: by Tiina (new)

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments It's been a long while since I read it, so I'd probably be interested in it.

Syndi Siahaan | 122 comments Meeeeee!!!!!!!! I'm planning to re-read The Count of Monte Cristo after I'm finished with Anne of Avonlea.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments Yes, let's start it on the first of March. I hear the best translation is by Robin Buss, although that's not the one I have.

I have only one translation to choose from :D

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments My copy is a great beautiful bound edition with no illustrations....just under 1100 pages, so no extra points, but it's so nice to hold and smells wonderful. I keep looking at it sitting on the shelf.

Mine is printed in two volumes, so I have to choose how to log it: as two books or one.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments Well if it's printed in two volumes then two I suppose. That's like my Don Quixote - which I recommend if you haven't read it yet! I'm on part 2 now. :)

That's what I did with the Brick! But the two volumes aren't sold separately and when I look it up, they only give the one big total page count which is roughly 1200 pages. Either way, for me, logging them separately is a lot easier than calculating the total page count after getting to the second volume :D

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments Yesterday on the Metro I got to talking to a lady with a dog. Just as we were coming to her stop I mentioned how we were starting to read The Count of Monte Cristo starting in March. She put her hand not holding the leash on her chest and exclaimed, Ohhh! That's my FAVOURITE book!

message 12: by Tiina (new)

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments Ha! I'm going home this weekend! So I can actually get the book at the beginning of March!

message 13: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments Hurrah! I'll start it after my guitar class tomorrow :)

message 14: by Tiina (new)

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments My book has been kidnapped and is being held hostage... at my grandmother's! Now if only I had been warned about it - no time to visit this weekend! At least the library should have it, but then I have to wait until Monday...

But on the positive side - my bags will be slightly lighter.

I like the illustrations. My book is very pretty but has none.

I'm rolling right along - page 51 so far.

I'd prefer to read it on paper, but if I can't get it from the library, I'll settle for the ebook!

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments I got the book! I'll start today or tomorrow, depending how much school wears me out today.

Hurray! No hurries, I only read 10pp yesterday.

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments I've got my copy and it's HUGE! It's a newer edition than the one I have at home and it's frustrating! As much as I want to read this, I have no desire to carry it along with me all day - it weighs an entire kilogram! And it's just the first part!

Get the epub from Project Gutenberg, I had a flip through it on my ipad and it's got pictures and everything. My copy is bloody huge too, with small writing, and heavy so I read it whilst lying on my little bed at home.

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments I'm switching between the Estonian translation, the English translation and the original French edition. It feels a little silly. Part of me wants to dedicate myself to one edition but since I've already read this book once, there's no harm in having three different ones...

message 22: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments I'm reading it very slowly, but enjoying it immensely!

message 23: by Tiina (new)

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments I switched to a different Estonian edition - it's translated by the same translator, but it's an older print and a lot easier to carry around. So I'm finally making some progress. At the same time, I've got a lot of reading to do for school, so still going at it slow.

Mine is rather large as well, but I'm reading A Tale of Two Cities for another group read, and want to get that done and dusted whilst slowly reading all my myriad of books :D

Always Forever Reading (alwaysforeverreading) Is it too late to join The Count of Monte Cristo group?

It's never too late! you can still read Les Miserables or any other classics you like as well :)

message 27: by Jazzy (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments Well I don't think i'm going to finish it by the end of May :) But I have read over 800 of 1080pp as I was reading it slowly hoping everyone else would chime in here. I'm really enjoying it and wish i could just hoover up words in a book, suck them all in and read it like that cos it's spectacular!

message 28: by Syndi Siahaan (new)

Syndi Siahaan | 122 comments I haven't been reading any books for a while so I'm still at page 280. BUT...a long holiday is coming up and hopefully I can read some more during that time :)

message 29: by Jazzy (last edited May 30, 2019 08:24AM) (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments Syndi is back! *cheers*

I'm on page 901/1080 now (179pp left!)
At this point in the book all hell breaks loose and the events are rolling right along!

Syndi Siahaan | 122 comments I moved from my parents' house to my own house (Yeay!!) I've never imagined before how busy it was..more than a month passed by so fast *sigh

Thanks, Jazzy. I'm happy to be back. I really miss reading and chatting in this group

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments I haven't picked up the second volume of my edition yet... so many things to do and worry about. I have one exam left plus all the JET stuff, so might be a long time until I pick up something longer again.
