SciFi/Space Opera where rich kid becomes an space army officer. Specifically, not looking for "Phule's Company" though there's an obvious similarity - from memory the book I'm looking for was not comedy.

Vaguely, the main character was male, son of a "ruthless" businessman. His father gives him a telescope like device, which has details of "favours" owed to his family across the galaxy.

Can't remember if I recall this bit properly - but I "think" the main character's surname was "Woolf" (or some variation of Wolf") - which other characters comment on as a description of the ruthlessness of his family.

I recall reading this book about 5+ years ago.
