Katelyn McLaughlin I was originally drawn to S.E. Hinton's novel "The Outsiders" first because I recognized it from years ago in elementary school when I was required to read it, and I absolutely loved it. Recently I have wanted to read it again because my favorite author in my favorite book quoted Hinton in his introduction, "It seemed funny to me that the sunset she saw from her patio and the one I saw from the back steps was the same one. Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren't so different. We saw the same sunset" (Hinton 40-41). It's only now, after reading the book, that I have a full understanding of the context of what this quote means, and the novel spoke to me so much more than I could have even imagined it would. This theme that people from different worlds could have lives more alike than they think resonated the most with me. In the end of the story, both sides of the social classes: the Socs and the greasers, have suffered losses that leave tragic scars across the characters lives, even though each side will blame the other for taking lives/friends from them, and will seek fights and revenge as a result.
My favorite character in the book is Sodapop. Soda is the middle brother between Ponyboy and Darry, and Hinton characterized him with a caring nature and spirit. Soda was the peacemaking brother of the three. He would comfort his little brother, Ponyboy, whenever their older brother Darry was being too harsh on him, such as one night early in the story when Sodapop puts his arm around his little brother, and tells him that their older brother, Darry, really does love him, even if he doesn't always show it. Then, Soda continues this characterization in the end of the novel, when he becomes the peacemaker between the tension of his younger and older brother, which was threatening to tear their family apart. I liked this part the most about Soda because he was the one to bring his brothers back together during their darkest hours.
