Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments That's ok Jess. :) Don't worry about it.

Perhaps take a look at the highlights after you read each chapter? That way you can get an idea what they are meant to point out.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments The First Chapter Set summary and highlights are ready and I'll post them as soon as my Wifi is back on (power cut here).

I'm asking you all to check them out and let me know which you prefer. If everyone prefers highlights and not full summaries, then I'll stick to only highlights.

Graeme Rodaughan I'm still knocking off a couple of novels before I start this. Hopefully I'm in on Monday.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Graeme wrote: "I'm still knocking off a couple of novels before I start this. Hopefully I'm in on Monday."

That's ok Graeme. :) Take your time.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments The Detailed Summary and the Highlights for Chapter Set 1 are posted.

Should I go on the same way for each chapter? Is this ok?

Or does everyone prefer just the Chapter Highlights?

Please let me know guys so I know how to proceed.

jess (nu6586) | 1729 comments Id say post both for at least 4 chapterS before we decide which we like.

Those of us who only want highlights can just skip past the lengthy descriptions.

message 57: by Bea (new) - rated it 3 stars

Bea | 2050 comments So I have now read all the chapter summaries and I'd say just the summaries would be enough.
You've been doing an amazing job so far, Laura!

Mayim de Vries | 2948 comments I'll go with the majority vote (but I'm happy with the highlights).

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Chapter Set 4 Summary posted.

I apologize but, due to of lack of time, I won't be able to make both chapter summaries and highlights for now. So I've stuck to chapter summaries.

For those of you who don't want to read them in full I've edited in bold certain sentences and key phrases, notes and paragraphs. So just look there for highlights.

Hope this works out for everybody.

jess (nu6586) | 1729 comments Ive been looking at your bold text anyways, so that works well for me. Thank you!!!

Graeme Rodaughan The summaries are an amazing effort, but I'd recommend the highlights only.

[1] I'm concerned by how much effort Laura must be putting into this.

[2] I think the highlights provide pointers to the key ideas, and I think that is enough. The rest will come out through discussion.

message 62: by Bea (new) - rated it 3 stars

Bea | 2050 comments Because the word geas has come up a few times: is it an actual english word or a fantasy word whose meaning I overlooked?

Don't stress yourself out, it's amazing how much effort you're putting into the summaries! If you don't have enough time it's totally fine if you write shorter summaries or just post the highlights!

Bea | 2050 comments Graeme wrote: "Geas. https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1..."

The dictionary app I'm using didn't find it, neither did my actual dictionary, so I wasn't sure if it's actually a common word (english isn't my first language).
According to Wikipedia it's a sort of curse and can be found in irish or welsh mythology

Graeme Rodaughan The subject of a geas is compelled to

[1] Achieve a goal or mission, or

[2] Avoid something.

They will devote their life to the content of the geas.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Thank you everyone! :)

Regarding the length of the summaries - they cannot be made "shorter" due to the density of the story. This volume being the start of a huge series, it gives a lot of details and info. And it gives them scattered all throughout the chapters. Like little pieces of a puzzle you need to pick up and put together so that you get the whole picture.

As Mayim has mentioned, while Malazan sprawls, this series goes deep. It is incredibly complex in depth and meaning. And to get the full meaning of it, you need to read between the lines and pay attention to details.

You will of course be able to understand even if you don't get it all. Hell! I didn't get it all by far on my first read and even got some things so wrong that they came to literally smack me in the face towards the end of the book!

I am one of those readers who at times makes assumptions and is then looking for details within the book to justify these assumptions because "I just want them to be like that!" Lots of us do that I suppose. And in my case, the assumptions got in the way of my understanding. Because Arithon's behaviour didn't make sense. Because I didn't quite get the laws and the magic. I'm one of those people who want to understand.

I was driving a few people crazy on the BR with both my questions and my "completely wrong assumptions" but I did get it in the end. Like an ice-cold water bucket dumped on my head but I had that coming! :D

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Now don't you go thinking you won't understand this book/series if you don't read my notes! Because that would be wrong.

You will understand it even without them!!
My notes are just meant to help along the way and possibly avoid the ice cold water bucket. :D

As Olivia mentioned on the thread, it is amazing how nice and smooth the story flows once you got all the details down and understood the basics. It makes a huge difference. All those of us who were in the first BR kept notes and kept coming back to them along the way.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments I chose the chapter summaries and not the highlights because by formatting in bold the most important details, the readers who want to check only highlights can do so by checking those only, while those who prefer full chapter summaries can go through the whole summary.

You will also notice that some of the subchapters have only one sentence/paragraph as plot summary and the rest is only explanation. Of history or structure, etc.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments "Geas" - that is a good question Bea.

I also looked up the word at my first read because of the same problem: non-native English speaker. And I too found the same explanation given by Graeme.

Do you want us to ask Janny if it means anything else?

Graeme Rodaughan Laura wrote: "I chose the chapter summaries and not the highlights because by formatting in bold the most important details, the readers who want to check only highlights can do so by checking those only, while ..."

That's a good idea.

Graeme Rodaughan Hi Laura. Is the word geas used in a way that is consistent with the dictionary meaning?

Essentially a curse obligation to do or refrain from doing something.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments That is how I understood it Graeme. And in the context, it is consistent with the meaning as far as I can tell.

Janny is a stickler for details and I doubt she would have meant it any other way. But just to be sure, I will ask on the Q&A.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Chapter Set 5 summary up. :)

Anni | 5066 comments I only read you're Prologue summary, because I haven't finished chapter one yet, but you did a great job, thank you so much for all the effort Laura ♥

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin | 1338 comments I found some of the old school covers in hardback and paperback at our used bookstore today for $3!! 😫 I can’t believe it!! We had to sell some stuff for money and I found those. And I have some coming from thrift books. 😊💕

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Oh! I envy you lovely!!! I ran around so much for the hardcovers of this series and still have 3 of them missing. The first 3 in the series are only available in mass market paperback here!

I almost fell over!!! I will at a pic at some point. I got one of her bookmarks today with the signed bookplate and a note! Omg! I want to get them all! She’s so nice right?! 😊💕

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Yes she is!! ❤💕 And please post pics!!!

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Thank you Olivia. :)

This one is important!

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Chapter Set 10 ready

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Chapter Set 12 summary posted. Includes a general insight into the gifted geas of all the royal lines.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin | 1338 comments Thank you for doing these love!! I’m going to read them all at once when you’re done 😊💕🌸😘

I hope you do this for the whole series if it’s not too much trouble

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Thank you lovely! 😘

I have slowed down a bit in the last few days because I got overwhelmed a bit with stuff at home but hope to get back into the rythm from tomorrow.

I am not sure if I will continue with them after this book. Not many people read them and perhaps it would be a better approach to just lend a hand while reading by building a bridge in between Janny and the readers in the BR. She has graciously agreed for the Q&A.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin | 1338 comments Awwww, I’m sorry. Don’t let it bog you down by any means and if you can’t continue with the other books that’s fine too. I just want you to know how much it’s has helped me and your appreciated. I’m too dumb too ask the rufht questions so you summaries help a lot. Janny became my friend the other day!!! Sqeals!! 😊. I will look at the q & a but they mostly confuse me more. Lol. It’s just because the smart people ask the questions and I’m like 🤔

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments YOU ARE NOT DUMB!
Don't ever say that ok!
You are sweet and sensitive and lovely and AWESOME and SMART! The fact that you read books like Curse of the Mistwraith itself and are loving them shows that YOU ARE SMART TOO! Just like everyone else here.

Don't pull yourself down lovely! YOU ROCK!!

And I will be there and explain whatever you don't understand as the series continues. If you want me to continue with the summaries and they help you then I will.💕❤😘

You’re soooooooo sweet!! ❌⭕️😘. No, the summaries are too much for you and you don’t need that! I will ask you when I get confused 😊

Olivia (vinjii) | 1144 comments Let me know if I can help in any way, Laura.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments Olivia wrote: "Let me know if I can help in any way, Laura."

Thank you! :)
I'm almost done with them now. Working on Chapter 14 which should be up by tomorrow and then only 4 more Chapter Sets left.

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments For those of you who are interested in a little background story, under Bonus Material you will find how the feud between s'Illesid and s'Ffalenn originated.

I have already posted that since the chapter summaries are complete. Talera's background story is still missing but there are a couple of resources for that and I have asked Janny's advice to see which to choose for a better understanding. Will post that also as soon as she replies.

Hope those summaries are at least of a little help to you all.

Happy reading! :)

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin | 1338 comments Thank you dearest, Laura 😊❌⭕️😘
